Northbound (The North Novels Book 1), by Cara Dee

Quinn Sawyer didn't apply for a temporary job at the remote O'Connor Adventure Retreat all the way in Alaska because he wants a change of scenery. He loves his sunny Florida, and he's only heading north because he needs answers from Declan O'Connor, the man who dated Quinn's aunt six years ago.

One day, Declan was just gone, and it had been the beginning of hell for Quinn. Most of his family suddenly hated him and still blames him for Declan ending the relationship with Quinn's aunt, though nobody will tell Quinn why.

He deserves to know how it could've possibly been his fault, and he's not going to let the crush he harbored for Declan stand in the way.

After finally tracking down Declan, Quinn gets on a plane. Or death machine, as he prefers to call it. But in his quest to find out the truth, he discovers there's a lot more to the Land of the Midnight Sun than seeking answers.

Highly recommended...

I have no words to explain how excited I was to find out that Cara Dee has new MM book coming...After all,Aftermath by this author is my favourite M/M book ever, and I absolutely loved all her other MM titles...and that right there sets bar pretty high.
So,has this book met my expectations? Well,I was worried there for a while, but in the end - yes,it did. Because, really,Alaska wilderness,May/December romance and dogs? I was sold by the page seven...

This book is part of The North Novels series, but the second book will be dealing with different couple. Just so you know...

Blurb pretty much tells you all you need to know regarding the storyline. It revolves around Declan and Quinn, their relationship and its progress to love, and how far they are willing to go for it...As is the case with all Cara Dee's characters,it's hard for me to write about characters, and what exactly I liked about them. Why? Because they seem so real to me...like if you asked me about some friend of mine and why I like her/him. I would be tongue-tied. Of these two,I liked Declan better, there was more substance to him in my opinion, but together - I loved them...

From the blurb, you would expect the main point of this book would be why Declan left six years ago so abruptly, and why Quinn was treated so badly by his own family after that. But,there was not much to it,and that was resolved easily.

What this book is really about is love, and places we are willing to go for it... After all, "Love could take you thousands of miles, but why make the journey if you didn’t enjoy the destination?"

A sexy Alaskan adventure!
By Rachel
*I was gifted a copy of Northbound by the author. I am not compensated for my honest opinion.*

Quinn Sawyer wants to know why his family has been shunning him for the last six years, but unfortunately those answers are five thousand miles away from his home in Miami, Florida. He lies his way into a three-month construction job at the O’Connor Adventure Retreat in Alaska just to get close to one-time friend and his aunt’s ex, Declan O’Connor.

Declan has been hiding part of himself since he was shamed into leaving Florida after being exposed six years ago. When Quinn turns up as the new handyman on Declan’s brother’s retreat, all of his shame is brought back to the surface. Neither Declan nor Quinn can deny their feelings for the other, but five thousand miles and several plane rides separate them once Quinn’s stint at the retreat is over. Both men will have to re-evaluate what is important in their lives and decide what sacrifices they’re willing to make for love.

Northbound is the first book in The North Novels m/m erotic romance series by Cara Dee. It features love, a little kink, and a lot of adventure. The story jumps right into Alaskan life, and we get a taste of winter in Alaska with blizzards, wolves, and the Northern Lights. Cara has an amazing way of incorporating the setting into the plot of the story, giving you a true adventure you otherwise wouldn’t be likely to take.

The story also doesn’t waste any time getting to the heart of the plot. Both Quinn and Declan had feelings for each other they had to keep under wraps six years ago, and now Quinn has conned his way into a job on the retreat in order to find out why Declan left without a word and cut off all communication. The men reconnect and fall in love, giving us some scenes where the heat sizzles right off the page. But their lives couldn’t be any more different, and they’ll both struggle with making sacrifices to be together.

The secondary characters are a fun addition to Northbound. They joke, tease, and bet each other, and they also provide more insight into life in Alaska. John and Alex are cousins who both have wives and kids at home in Anchorage, but they work three months out of the year at the retreat, away from their families. Kyle is also introduced as a playboy who loves hunting for his food and cares for his niece. And Logan is Quinn’s best friend from home who recently found out he’s a father. Kyle and Logan’s story is in book two of the series, Northland, but you don’t have to read Northbound to understand what’s happening in Northland. (I read book two first!)

I was sucked into this story from the first word to the last. I highly recommend Northbound if you like m/m erotic romance and a good adventure.

There aren’t a lot of M/M Romance stories set in Alaska. Yes, they do exist, but there aren’t a ton of them. That was the first thing that attracted me to Northbound by Cara Dee. You may think that is a strange reason, but I find that Alaska, more than almost any other setting, becomes a character in and of itself in a well written story. Northbound is no different in this respect. The second thing that attracted me was the author herself. I have read Aftermath and Outcome by Dee in the past and both enjoyed her style and admired her ability to tell a story.

Northbound had be intrigued from the blurb. I had an inkling of what the story was going to entail, but I was curious as to how it would play out. I was not disappointed.

Northbound isn’t a story that is going to make you cry or tear your hair out in suspense. But it won’t leave you with cavities from its sweetness either. Quinn and Devon are two men who have lusted after each other from afar for years. Neither knowing of the other’s interest. They are a mismatched pair. I am not completely sure of their age difference, but I do know it is pretty significant. There is a bit of a kink factor involved in Donovan’s attraction to Quinn, and the men have a history.

That history is what brings Quinn to the remote resort in Alaska. From there we have a fairly straightforward story of two men who dance around their attraction and eventually fall in love and have hot sex. Then they have to overcome their differences to carve out a life for themselves together.

I would classify Northbound as a comfort read. One I know I can go back to time and again when I need characters I love and a nice happily ever after.
