Don't waste your money.

Complete waste of money. Do yourself a favor and buy the established texts on ethnobotany from reputable publishers. This author took only a page and a half to define the field when there have been entire texts devoted to the subject. I doubt the author has ever done any real ethnobotany fieldwork since such experience is not reflected in what was written. The text is an unsophisticated scattershot approach and includes plants from all over the world that have no connection to each other, with little or no cultural context included. For example, kava and peyote were on the same page, with only a paragraph each. The plants grow practically on opposite sides of the planet, in totally different environments, with totally different uses and cultural significance. Their uses and effects are not even remotely similar. No mention that Omer Stewart wrote the definitive text on the cultural significance of peyote. I'm very upset this thin manuscript of material that can be found in more detail on the internet set me back $90. I was expecting a text that could be used In the classroom, not something not much more advanced than a senior paper.

Ethnobotany: A modern perspective and must read

Ethnobotany: A Modern Perspective is a must read for those looking for a comprehensive, easy-to-use book on the subject. Divided into 11 chapters, with worksheets following each chapter, the reader is gradually introduced to complex relationships between cultures and the uses of plants. Ethnobotany requires a variety of different skills, such as botanical training for identification/preservation and anthropological training to understand the cultural concepts, but Dr. Rani Vajravelu breaks down these topics into organized, comprehensible sections.
This book is required for BOT 3800 (Ethnobotany) at the University of Central Florida, a class I took in the Spring of 2009. I relied heavily on the book for class and tests. It is a book you will need and read, cover to cover. I found the subject (and book) interesting and focused toward the college student. The author knows her audience, and entertains accordingly. Enjoy!

Great book! Not only is Professor Vajrevelu a good author, she also a great professor! I took her Ethnobotany class at UCF. She is wonderful and very fair professor!
