What if I never found this book ?

I am so glad that I make a habit of paying attention to references from other authors. As I'm reading The Road Less Traveled, I noticed in M. Scott Peck's book, that he quoted Wheelis's book. I don't know if I would have ever heard of this of little gem of a book, so full of powerful words, if I hadn't noticed the title looking at me at the bottom of page 43 in TRLT. As someone who was treated as target practice physically as a child by my mother, but damaged even more so psychologically, it was so soothing to be able to relate to Wheelis's account of his father's treatment of him and how the author's acceptance of his father's opinion as fact, maintained a stronghold on the choices he made through adult life. He so articulately, using some great analogies to really drive in the concepts, demonstrated that it's only your *acceptance* of the verdict brought upon by adults in your childhood life that make your life tough now. Once you can trace your current behaviour to experiences as a youth, you see the freedom you really have in your reactions to life in the present. I'll stop now, because It's obvious I'm not a writer - just very passionate about letting people know how effective this book can really be. Look at it like this guy Wheelis met you in person, took you to lunch, and he let you in on what he found out as a psychoanalyst, about how the guilt brought upon him in childhood, and the value judgements that he accepted as true, truly messed with the actual physiological reactions (steel fingers around the heart when he's put on the spot socially) to social situations he still experiences in his 60's. But this book is way better than that lunch with him in person. There's a lot more material than just an hour of conversation, and it's always there, and you can understand so much by re-reading and re-reading, and that's what I've done, with more understanding each time I re-read it.

Change is a daunting task

This compulsively readable book explores the nature of suffering, freedom, insight,will, action, and change. What elsewhere is elaborated upon in volumes is here explored in less than 120 pages. How you ask? He writes incisivley and "cuts to the quick!"
Among the many "things" Wheelis takes on is the question of who and what we are. He, like the behaviorists or existentialists, concludes we are what we do. If actions define a man those which are repetitious become self sustaining and with time's passage, highly resistant to change. Acts or events which in the past shape us, become not just something we know but rather "a rule of mental operation" or what we are. So how do people change? Change may occur within the context of varying circumstances. People may change from within spontaneously and unthinkingly as the result of physiological changes as is the case in adolesence or old age. Likewise, they may change by force of external circumstances as in the case of survivors of POW camps. Finally people may change from within, consciously, deliberately and by design. But deliberative change is a tale of immense difficulty. Why, because no one can do the deed but oneself. At its very best therapy may be "catalytic"and insight illuminating but neither can get the"job" done. According to Wheelis both may mean little or nothing at all. If the "job" of change is to be accomplished it can only be brought about through intention, will, determination and action.
To change oneself is a daunting task for which there are no guarantees. In a metaphoric sense, when we attempt to change we become not only the sculptor but the marble to be worked upon as well

Will You Change?

Wheelis might argue that my writing this review is a conundrum: mandatory necessity versus arbitrary necessity. I cannot or will not answer that question. Suffice it to say that you the reader ought to make the time to read this slim book.
His writing is embarrassingly succinct and refreshingly frank. Thus, the book invites several readings; I have read it several times. Keep in mind that the subject of this book is self-directed change. "So long as one lives, change is possible; but the longer such behavior is continued the more force and authority it acquires." How then do we change? "Insight is instrumental to change, often an essential part of the process, but does not directly achieve it."
The author, to his credit, includes himself as a portrait of one who struggles with change. Read the chapter entitled "Grass." A friend, reading it, refused to borrow the book. She condemned the story as an example of child abuse. Superficially, it certainly seems so. One cannot avoid, however, the poignancy of the father's heartfelt remarks, "I wish you could understand, though, that I wouldn't be trying to teach you so fast if I knew I would live long enough to teach you more slowly." The father lay sick with tuberculosis, dying but months later.
Wheelis puts the story in context that will resonate with all who read it: "Thus I was made a psychological slave." But, "A slave is one who accepts the identity ascribed to him by a master." So, can one change? How? I cannot answer that question. I can give you one last quote from Wheelis, "The new mode will be experienced as difficult, unpleasant, forced, unnatural, anxiety-provoking. It may be undertaken lightly but can be sustained only by considerable effort of will. Change will occur only if such action is maintained over a long period of time."
Or, was B.F. Skinner more correct? "A person does not act upon the world, the world acts upon him."

Good book, a little simplistic

A good book for basic prinicples. Does very little to talk about selling the final product in terms of "features, benefits, proof" that will solidify the sales portion of your proposal. The book assumes you already have a strong working knowledge of what you're getting into, resturant business wise but are not sure what you need to do for business case development.

Solid, but introductory.

I took much of the summer off from reading new books, instead concentrating on stuff that's been languishing on my backlist, books I started back in the mists of time, had to return to the library, and that subsequently got lost in the book-journal shuffle (or that I have to get through interlibrary loan now, as I switched library systems a couple of years back). Opening a Restaurant... is one of those; I started it way back in August of 2007, had to return it because someone else had a hold on it, and forgot to take it out again until last week. While the dream of actually opening a restaurant has fallen by the wayside (or at least been put on a very very backburner), I figured I'd finish the book anyway and report back. It's the curse of the obsessive reviewer.

One of the great things about nonfiction is that in many cases you don't have to provide a summary; one look at the combined title and subtitle should tell you all you need to know. That's the case here, and Fullen does it short, sweet, and to the point, taking you step by step through the writing of a business plan and feasibility study, with little of the rah-rah-rah confidence-building stuff you find in so many more tiring books like this. The downside to that is that the book stays well within the norms, not mentioning any alternate suggestions for style or the like. That said, if you're looking to write a classic business plan to drum up money to open a restaurant, you'll want to read this unless you already know what you're doing. ***

Disappointing

The how-to aspects of the book are too general. E.g., "Which [software] should I choose? The answer is the one you believe you'll feel most comfortable using." And then the author goes on to list a few software packages and quotes their marketing info. The companion CD is a huge disappointment: here was an opportunity to develop and provide some business-planning spreadsheet templates. Instead, the CD includes exactly one file: a sample business plan (in Word format) for a proposed restaurant in Illinois. It's not a template -- just an example. It's pretty easy to find other examples by doing some web searching.

In many cases, these essays explicate the writers' motivation and stylistic choices, enabling students to better understand how stylistic elements—such as character, dialogue, and mood—work seamlessly with the governing pattern of the whole to engage the reader and achieve the writer's predetermined goal. The second section is a stylistic table of contents listing each story by one of the three stylistic devices that dominate this often quickly paced form: voice, point of view, and setting. More suggestive than prescriptive, it is meant to stimulate thought about stylistic choices as students embark on the creative process. The fourth section comprises 20 exercises that will challenge students' ability to craft succinct narratives that balance emotional pitch and intellectual power.

An Excellent, If Perhaps Introductory, Work

Mark D. Jordan's "The Ethics of Sex" is quite an accomplishment. In lucid prose he presents a genealogy of Christian sexual ethics (from the patrisitic fathers to the Reformers to later Protestants) and, in the latter portion of the book, progresses to a discussion of directions to explore in the possibility of redeeming pleasure in Christian sexual ethics.

As an undergraduate student unfamiliar to the history of Christian views of sex, I found the genealogy alone very enlightening (even though I felt sick as I learned the genealogy of "orthodoxy"). The concluding portion of the book was excellent as well, coming as a refreshment and source of excitement for contemporary Christian sexual ethics. Jordan seems to know how pick his arguments and points of contention well, so the book feels (at times) breezy and light yet engaging and rigorous. In one sense, however, it therefore has the feel of a more introductory work - which I would argue it is!

In all aspects, a highly recommended work.

More than Expected

While looking for an anthology of short stories, I came across this "textbook" and the most diverse assortment of short story writers I have ever seen. For those who appreciate the poetry of judicious prose this is a find.

Also liked the sections categorizing voice, point-of-view, and setting. Great technical examples that show rather than tell you the differences. Bought it, kept it, still using it, and now even recommending it. Respectful creative writing that will help keep the genre thriving.

This was a required text for a college course. It has been like visiting old friends. The "classic" authors and others I'd never heard of provide a very good read, and the insights into writing by some of the authors is helpful.

Latimer Riley was born in London in 1957. He has been a sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous since early 1982. For the last 10 years he has been living and working in the Canary Islands. Remarkable, Refreshing

This is a remarkable book - an oasis for the real alcoholic who is lost in the equivocal desert of AA ideology. His immaculate exposition of Step 1 could serve to shine the light of truth on the experience of anyone who has been around the rooms for a long time and just can't seem to capture true recovery. This book helped me to break through some of my own stubborn misinterpretations and have a new experience with the Big Book; an experience which has proved to be invaluable. Check it out!!

Brilliant book.

This is a brilliantly written book by a very intelligent man. The author is not afraid to take a hard look at the fellowship and discuss his view point. If you are a true Big Book advocate, this book is for you. It is not for the middle of the road type approach to recovery.
