Just ten days after Alan Shepard Jr. became America's first man in space on May 5, 1961, President John F. Kennedy challenged the nation, suggesting that the United States should land a man on the moon by the end of the decade. The ambitious goal of Project Apollo required a series of intermediate steps, which were to be explored by Project Gemini. Created on January 3, 1962, Project Gemini's objectives were many. During ten manned flights in 1965 and 1966, astronauts would perform spacewalks, rendezvous with orbiting vehicles using maneuvering and propulsion systems, and perform docking tests. A great deal of experience was gained and equipment tested, and with one exception - a dry land capsule landing - all of the planned objectives were met. All ten manned flights were made using Titan II two-stage boosters that were purpose-built for Gemini and known as "GLV" or Gemini-Titans. The prime contractor for the Mercury capsule McDonnell Aircraft, constructed the two-man Gemini capsule. A larger, more sophisticated spacecraft than Mercury, the Gemini capsule relied on a detachable Equipment Module for power, propulsion, and life-support systems. The capsule itself was outfitted with ejection seats, carried an on-board Guidance Computer, and could be flown in six directions. Created by NASA and contractor McDonnell Aircraft, this Familiarization Manual explains all the systems aboard the Mercury space capsule including cabin controls, sequence, electrical power, cooling, guidance and control, communications, retrograde rocket, and landing systems and procedures. Dating from September of 1965 for the long range and extended missions, it represents a late revision of documents created at the beginning of the Gemini program. Originally restricted, this manual has been declassified and is presented in its entirety, running nearly 600 pages.

Good but also disappointing

This book is "just" a reprint of the Gemini Program manual with the same title (SEDR 300, 20 SEP 1965) for the Long Range and Modified Configurations of the Gemini Spacecraft. It should be immediately noted that there is also another version of the manual for the Rendezvous and Docking Configurations that has a few chapters more devoted to docking mechanisms, Agena, and EVA equipment.
This said, the fact that the book is just a reprint of something easily available on the Internet, is not bad, because a well printed and bounded copy of this extensive manual is very handy for people very interested in the subject: with this book you do not need many other references to be knowledgeable on Gemini.
The problem is that the book misses the whole Section 8 (about 290 pages long) devoted to Guidance and Control System, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the Gemini missions: the first rendezvous missions, the first orbital maneuvers, the first computer in space (manned S/C) and so on. Without that section the book is really lacking the heart of the Gemini S/C.
The section is missing because originally provided in a classified annex to the manual, an annex that has been declassified aeons ago and that is also readily available on the Internet. How disappointing if you hoped to have everything concentrated in a single book. I wish the publishers start thinking about producing the annex as a separate book, which will be in the end a good thing so that topic is left separate also for a more easy handling.
Another disappointment has been the treatment of foldouts (typical in this kind of manuals). In certain cases the foldouts have been shrinked, n other cases have been split into separate pages. While the treatment of split foldouts is very intelligent (with plenty of overlap between adjacent pages) those shrinked are more often than note unreadable.
I am a bit undecided if to return the item or not because it fails to deliver the advantages of a printed version versus the electronic versions available elsewhere (for free).

Clean printing of thorough NASA Gemini manual

This is very nice capture of the Gemini Familiarization Manual for the Long-Duration missions. It's a complete, very clean copy of the NASA document, which was and is a thorough description of the spacecraft from top to bottom. It is imperative, however, that the publisher also make available the "section 8" companion volume of the Familiarization Manual, as well as the version of the manual for the Rendezvous missions. Otherwise, their treatment of this subject is woefully incomplete.

Great book!

This book is top-notch. An outstanding gathering of historic NASA documants in a bound text that allows the reader to review the nuts and bolts of the Gemini vehicle. It is an outstanding addition to my collection and spaceflight library.
