A creative approach to spelling

A creative way to master commonly misspelled words. I am going to have my 12 year old work on this book.It has wonderful mix of activities to help you master the 150 most commonly misspelled words with out memorizing. So it is different from the regular memorize and take a spelling test method.

We love spelling now!

This has changed spelling lessons forever for us! We tried all the lists, online programs, anything boring we could think of. My daughter really couldn't get into spelling even though she excels at every other subject we have touched on. We have only been working in this book for a couple of weeks so we don't know the final result yet. I will update later with that, but I wanted to post pictures to give any potential buyers an idea of what the program is like. The general idea is that if your child colors, re-writes, fills in missing letters enough in words, they will retain the spelling better. Not as much memorization as just getting the images stuck in the brain for later by associating certain words with how they colored them in or what letters they had to fill in the blanks.

My daughter says this is a zillion times better than any other spelling program she has tried. This book focuses on 150 words, but you could easily use this format to create your own lists and make even more word lists to work with down the road of your education adventure.

Great Way to Learn The 150 Misspelled Words

I love how the child colors in the words, fills in the missing letters, and copies the words. This is not your typical spelling book.

Most of the pages have a logic puzzle as well. I plan to have at least 5 of my kids use this eventually. Right now my oldest is working through the book.

I did want to mention if you ordered Dyslexia Games Series C this is the 8th book in that series.If you complete the recommended 3 pages a day your child will complete the book in a little over 3 weeks. I'm having my child complete 1 page a day.

The description says 98 pages but there is actually 49 pages to be completed. If you plan to use this with more than one child you do have permission to copy the book within your own family ONLY.

About the Author
Michael C. Ashton is a professor of psychology at Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Western Ontario in 1998. As a grad student in the late 1990s, together with Kibeom Lee, he did some cross-cultural research to find out whether the “Big Five” personality dimensions found in North America could be recovered in other cultures. Using their own work and that of other researchers, they found that there were actually six personality dimensions. The “new” one was the H factor, or the Honesty-Humility Factor, was discovered and is now considered one of the six dimensions of human personality. In addition to the second edition of the textbook, Individual Differences and Personality, he is the author of numerous articles in scientific journals, and co-authored with Kibeom Lee The H Factor of Personality.

An excellent introduction

This is the 2nd edition of "Individual Differences". I reviewed the 1st edition at length and gave it 5 stars.

I haven't yet had a chance to see the new edition, but the author was kind enough, in answer to my enquiry, to summarise the revisions. Since there are (as I write) no reviews as yet, I refer you to my original review, and reproduce the author's summary (with his permission) below.

When I've had a chance to read the new edition, I will replace this review with a revised one. In the meantime, I hope this helps:

There's a new chapter on Vocational Interests. It's one of the shorter chapters and has a somewhat more practical emphasis than most of the others do, but it gives much more coverage to this topic than was given in the 1st edition.

The chapter on Personality Disorders is about half rewritten*, to coincide with the reconceptualization in the forthcoming DSM5. (I think the DSM5 framework is an improvement, and it makes the structure of the chapter simpler than it previously had been.)

The descriptions of several of the more "technical" issues (especially reliability and validity in Chapter 2, and heritability studies in Chapter 6) are being somewhat streamlined and reorganized, and thereby (I think) clarified and improved.

Throughout the book there are several new boxes and subsections and paragraphs to incorporate new research findings from the past six years, including some topics not really covered in the 1st edition (e.g., the (non-)existence of personality "types"; rater biases in self- and observer reports; personality similarity in friends; "games" as illustrations of frequency-dependent selection), and some topics where new findings have emerged (e.g., IQ and birth order; heritability of sexual orientation; personality stability between childhood and adulthood).

I would think that the overall scale of revisions is somewhat larger than in the usual "next edition" of a textbook, but the basic structure and content of the 1st edition will remain, so it isn't a radically new book.

*What happened was that the DSM5 people decided at the last minute to abandon their new system for personality disorder diagnosis; instead it's being included only as an appendix within the DSM5. I'm still giving that new system a lot of space in the book (because I think it makes more sense), but I'm now keeping some description of the old system simply because it's still the one that clinicians will be using.

Ron Hansen is the author of eight novels and three short story collections. Intersections of Autobiographies

If I could be a writer I'd want to be Ron Hansen. It's not about the action with him. It's about what events and actions mean in the lives of his characters. It's about significance.

This book is a collection of Hansen's short stories, some republished from an earlier collection, Nebraska, and some newly published. Although I had read Nebraska years ago, I didn't mind at all re-reading those republished stories. Hansen is a writer who bears reading over and over. One in particular, Wickedness, is a story that still haunts me with its depictions of lives lost in a sudden freeze during a Nebraska winter. The depictions have the feel of reality, so much so that I left the story believing, rightly or wrongly, that it wasn't fiction -- if fiction, it's the kind of fiction that merits the over-used "truer than fact" label.

Some of these stories strike what to me is a different tone for Hansen -- a farcical tone I haven't appreciated in him before. The title story, She Loves Me Not, is an example, with characters and events spiraling away at a right angle from anything "normal".

I think what makes these stories, and Hansen's writing in general, so engrossing is his ability to disclose the depth of every human life in them. It's as if every character is experienced in the first person. He is telling the autobiographies of each character, and the story is their intersection.

If you haven't read any of Hansen's novels or short stories, this is not a bad place to start. It contains some samples of his historical fiction, in the tough portrayals of life in Nebraska, drawn out in larger form in novels like Desperadoes and The Assassination of Jesse James. It also contains those character studies of desperate or doomed characters, as in A Wild Surge of Guilty Passion. If you read these stories, you'll want to move on to those longer, fuller novels as well.

The nineteen stories in Ron Hansen's new collection, She Loves Me Not, provide readers who love short fiction with a tasty smorgasbord. Through efficiency and precision, Hansen drew me into the lives and settings of people whose behavior displays a wide range of human nature. I found myself reading two stories in the morning and two in the evening as a way to pace myself and reflect on each one individually. Readers who savor fine writing and enjoy diverse characters and geography are those most likely to enjoy this collection.

The best Madrid guide

I have been traveling to Madrid for years on and off and know the city well. But I have struggled to find a decent guide that covers all the ground. Some, like Lonely Planet have good maps but are superficial on museums, culture and dreadful when it comes to restaurants. Others stress culture or eating out but are thin on practicalities.

This is the only book I have found which covered the ground. And it's down to the author who writes clearly and wittily, has good taste in food and hotels and is clearly a genuine authority on Spain rather than a person shipped in to do a quick job.

A must for a short travel

This book is very useful if you are planning to stay 1-5 days in the city. I have the same book for 6 more cities and they are all great. Very useful metro train maps, city maps and area maps. It incldes day trips to places outside the city.

If you are looking for a book to guide you through a few days in Madrid, look no further--this is it. This book will take you to major sites, off the beaten path, to tourist attractions, local hangouts and everything in between. Don't waste your money or break your shoulder carrying around an expensive and heavy guidebook.

About the Author
Oswald Almasi was born in Tanzania and educated at the University of Dar-es-Salaam. He has been an educator for more than 40 years, in the last 17 years as a professor of Swahili at the University of Toronto and also at York University since 2005.
Michael David Fallon graduated from the University of Toronto as an African Studies Specialist. While at the University of Toronto he studied several languages including Portuguese, Arabic, and also Swahili under the tutelage of Oswald Almasi. He has also lived and spent time in East Africa.
Nazish Pardhan Wared was born in Tanzania and educated at Aga Khan Mzizima Secondary School in Dar-es-Salaam. She has also studied advanced Swahili under Oswald Almasi.
