Excellent tiny book with many, many words

This is a tiny picture book that has thousands, if not tens of thousands of words packed in. The index contains about 4500 words, but I'm sure there are actually loads more. It'll be one of the smaller books on your bookshelf, but there are 360 very compact pages with a lot of information. It's thematically arranged, and for example, there are two pages dedicated to baseball, two to bicycles, four for vegetables and four for fruits. And hundreds of other pages dedicated to many interesting topics. Each Spanish word has an English translation. I also really like how for some words it gives both a Latin American Spanish translation and a Spain Spanish translation. For example, the beans translates to los frijoles in Latin America and las alubias in Spain. But, there are also specific words for dozens of types of beans, like las habas for the fava beans.

The pages are really high quality, and the pictures are bright and extremely vibrant. The pages are a little thicker than most pages, too, so it shouldn't tear much. The print is small because the book is small, though. I have pretty good eyes, so the small print didn't bother me, but if you have any kind of eye problems, you might not like this book very much.

But overall this is awesome, and you really should add this to your library if you're learning Spanish. There are more useful words with pictures in this book than any other Spanish learning book that I've found.

Great vocabulary resource for those learning Spanish.

I think that teaching and learning vocabulary visually is more akin to the way in which a child acquires it. The book is actually smaller than I imagined. It is still large enough to read, but I imagine it would be some 8x10 type large book. It is more like a 5 x 7 or so. I just checked an the listed specs (which no one would probably read) show it is about that size. The picture, however makes me think it is large. I only deducted 1 star for this reason. The book itself seems excellent!

The best book on the market.

A WONDERFUL book for vocabulary. They just packed so much into this little book - practically everything you use or are familiar with. The sections cover people, appearance, health, home, services, shopping, food, eating out, study, work, transportation, sports, leisure, environment, and includes a reference section for time, maps, seasons, numbers, weights and a section of useful phrases, antonyms and particles. And it's all covered in sections, tons of tons of everything.

For example, under shopping is a subsection for la farmacia (drug store) and in that subsection, you receive the Spanish words for: dental care, feminine hygiene, deodorants, vitamins, pharmacy, pharmacist, cough medicine, herbal remedies, skin care, sunscreen, sunblock, insect repellant, wet wipes, tissue/Kleenex, sanitary napkin, tampon, panty liner, capsule, pill, medical measuring spoon, instructions, cream, ointment, gel, suppository, eye drops, eye dropper, syringe, needle, spray, powder,iron, multivitamins, disposable, medicine, pain killer, calcium, side effects, souble, laxative, sedative, magnesium, expiration date, dosage, diarrhea, sleeping pill, insulin, travel sickness pills, medication, throat lozenge and anti-inflammatory. That is one tiny part of "Shopping."

Very, very thorough. If you want to know what it is, it's probably in this book!!! It's unlikely that you'd need anything else. No book would be more complete. I've bought a bunch of them and can say this is the best with some degree of certainty. :) I wish I'd found this sooner.

I even learned words for things (like parts of a camera) that I don't know in English. :)

As always with anything by DK, it is nicely laid out and every page is inviting.

My only con is the book is small and chunky. That's really handy if you wish to carry the thing around, but I'd like it to be bigger. (It's about 5.5" across and 6.5" high, a smidge under an inch thick.)

Slow down, enjoy the moment.

The book I read The Dash: Making a Difference with Your Life by Linda Ellis and Mac Anderson is a short one. In fact, it's filled with a lot of pictures and is based on a brief poem entitled "The Dash." It's the result of a project, really a labor of love, in which Anderson, the man behind the Successories brand, took a poem written by Ellis, and expanded on it in a unique way. You know Anderson's company from those beautiful inspirational one-word posters that exhort you to recognize the value of Discipline or Dedication or Attitude. They re so well-known you can probably picture one of his posters right now. Anderson turned his trademark approach to Ellis's poem to create a book that's very much like a collection of those posters in the first half and an exploration of what the words mean in the second half. I recently received this book as a gift and I'm so glad I did. Though the book isn't widely available any longer, you may be able to find it at independent bookstores, or second-hand on the Internet. I reviewed it anyway, because the message truly touched me. Even if you cannot get your hands on the book, I urge you to use Google to get the poem "The Dash."

The title of the poem refers to the dash in expression of the length of person's life, as in history books, in obituaries, or eulogies. And, the poem itself is written as if it's a eulogy that encourages those in attendance to think about what characterized the dash in a deceased person's life, for instance 1940 - 2010. Though the numbers we focus on are the birth date and the date of death, it's all that's represented by that little dash that is the real story of that person.

The question this book ends up asking, as does the poem, is: What did you do with the dash in your life? The book expands in the second half to share stories related to the stanzas of the poem. Life lessons about living in the dash. One of the very poignant examples is a story called "To A Child...Love is Spelled T.I.M.E." I found that story of the contrast between a father's recollections of certain days of his life and his son's. It's a compelling story that I took as such a strong reminder of keeping our focus on what's truly important in our lives.

Though you may not be able to purchase a copy of the book, with its inspiring photos and expansion of the poem, I urge you to seek out the story and the poem. I know that I will be keeping them handy as a reminder to myself as I rush along, keeping up with the demands of a modern life. If it reminds me even occasionally to slow down, enjoy the moment, and focus my attention on how I'm living my dash, it will be a wonderful addition.

Great Tale of the Eastern Frontier

I love this book! Eckert's classic tale of Simon Kenton and settlement of the Ohio Valley is a must read for anyone interested in the history of the United States. This book was recommended to me after reading Eckert's "Dark and Bloody River". It is exciting, highly engaging, and historically detailed. The notes at the end of the book are a novel by themselves. The story of Kenton, Boone, and the Kentucky settlers is truly amazing. It has often been said that this should be required reading in high school and I can't help but agree. Eckert's books take place in a time and place nearly forgotten by modern Americans. Children raised on the old "Cowboys and Indians" westerns never learn that there was a whole other "West" on the Eastern frontier and the Northwest Territory. I grew up in Ohio, and I never learned about many of the events that happened in my own back yeard until I began reading Eckert! Many people are surprised to learn that there were a number of very bloody and significant battles during the Revolutionary War west of the Appalaichans, right here in Ohio in fact. A whole chapter of our history is being forgotten, but luckily, Eckert's books help to prevent that.

This is a difficult review to write because I have such mixed feelings about this book. It is a thrilling narrative of life on the early frontier along the Ohio River and incorporates some prodigious research into a slice of early American history that I was fascinated by. I recently spent some time in the Lexington and Cincinnati area and that visit drew me to this book even though it had been on my shelf for some time.
The author in his preface makes the claim that this is fact not fiction and that every conversation truthfully represented what passed between the respective parties even though he was taking some poetic license to aid the narrative flow. In my opinion he did much more than this attributing inner thoughts and feelings to characters including Native American characters that went beyond his own pre-established bounds. I admit that much of that embellishment makes the book highly readable. So much so that it reads more like a novel than an historical account.
In addition about halfway through the seemingly endless gruesome descriptions of the Indian's torture of their victims and captives became almost tedious for me. I am not contesting that these events happened , I'm just feeling that the author placed too much emphasis on driving home the ruthlessness and cruelty on both sides and the book for me started to take on the feel of whites vs Indians with less emphasis on the settlement of the region. The best example of what I felt were odd choices was an episode where he goes into detail about the Shawnee's capture and revenge on a couple by gutting them while tied to a tree and forcing them to circle the tree while their entrails emptied on to the ground. He immediately followed this with a short segue into a description of the birth of Simon Kenton's son John. You can argue that the juxtaposition demonstrates the full cycle of life on the frontier but for me it was over the top.
All of that said I respect the research that went into this work and the writing at times is gripping but there is at least as much fiction as fact in here and for that reason I can only give it 3 stars.

History for the young

This is just wonderful history told in a manner that captures the reader. I read the book when it first came out years ago.and loved it I wrote a review then. I had occasion recently to recommend a hood history book and I picked this one. In doing so I decided to re read it and just finished. It was even better the second time. The real Simon Kenton was a real larger than life person including Tecumseh, William Henry Harrison and George Rogers Clark. I only wish this book, and the others, Wilderness War, wilderness Empire, Dark and Bloody Ground,and Tecumseh would be made into a feature film. Eckert has done the country an invaluable service by recording our early history from the French and Indian War to end of the Shawnee country . Since the film seems unlikely everyone should read each Eckert book.
We both laugh and cry at tv reporters that ask our young college students basic history questions they are unable to answer. To those teachers that have the privilege of teaching young people please assign Eckert's books for them to read among other things.
The research cited in the Frontiersman is so extensive. I reading it I learned Andrew Jackson, great hero and President might have been ineligible to serve as President. Reliable witnesses of his family said that his mother and father immigrated from Ireland and Andrew was born on the ship enroute to America.
