Excellent and entertaining

This is an account of the author's journey across Africa, mostly by bus and hitchhiking, in the 1980s. It was originally published in 1989 under Dalrymple's real name, Anthony Daniels. This and his other travel books are to my mind the best available. His descriptions of lands, peoples, and cultures are clear, concise, perceptive, and fascinating.

He is also known for conservative political views but there is little political slant in this book. If anything, he should have been more skeptical. His observation that the Hutu/Tutsi problem in Rwanda had been "settled . . . once and for all" and that the Tutsi were an "all-but-spent force" was proved wrong in the following decade. And the political leaders he mentions have been replaced by new ones, who have changed some countries' names. But the new leaders are generally little different from the old and central Africa is little different from the way it was twenty years ago (or, for that matter, forty years ago or sixty or . . . ). This book remains an educational and very entertaining look at it.

Africa from up close.

Dr. Dalrymple worked in Africa as a physician. This is an account of his journey across Africa via land transportation when he had decided to return to England. Like everything that I have read by this author it is interesting, witty in parts, provocative in parts and generally excellent. If you are expecting an idealized portrait of the people and conditions in Africa, this is not the book for you. Some of what Dr. Dalrymple writes is positive, but a lot is very negative and will not please you if you have liberal ideas about how things should be on the Dark Continent. Dr. Dalrymple tells it like it is.

Great book

This book is full of detail and first hand accounts about his trip through Africa. It is a wonderful read. I wish he had gone through even more counties so I could learn even more. I've read about five Dalrymple books in a row now. His style is great.

About the Author
The peripathetic Tony Robinson-Smith was born in England and has lived and studied in Canada. He has visited 55 countries in his travels and has taught in Canada, Japan, the United States, Bhutan and Morocco.

Six Years!!!

Subtitled - A Journey Around the Planet Without Leaving the Surface.

Tony Robinson-Smith has been teaching English in Japan for five years when he suddenly decides he's had enough. (having sung the only 2 english songs on the karaoke list at a bar over and over again may have helped swing his decison...)

He decides he will not travel by air at any time and heads back to England to begin his journey. With no firm plan, he hitchhikes his way through France and Spain without issue. Things get really interesting when he attempts to cross the Sahara and transverse Algeria. (Always take extra water....) He winds his way throughout Africa, reaches Cape Town and tries to figure out how to sell himself as an experienced (read none) seaman to cross the Atlantic. Each chapter is prefaced with a map tracing the route he is taking. I found it interesting to follow along.

And so his journey continues - around South America and up into North America. Although I found the entire book engrossing, I really enjoyed the chapters dealing with Canada. Tony decides to bicycle across Canada going east to west. However he starts out in April. Canucks will realize we can still get snow at this time - especially in the Maritimes.

"When would Canada warm up. No wonder ninety per cent of the bloody poluation lives huddled along the U.S. border"

It is also in Canada that he meets Nadya. Nadya joins Tony when he reaches the Asian part of his journey. The journey slows down a bit here and we are treated to more leisurely and detailed chapters.

All in all, Robinson-Smith manages to touch base in fifty-five countries. This book was written from his notes and journals. As an armchair tourist, I was enthralled by tales of places most of us will never visit. The locales he explores and people he meets are fascinating.

Most remarkable is that he achieves his goal - he never flies. But the whole adventure takes six years! Not many people would see this through to the end. Interestingly he is now teaching English in Bhutan. Wonder if there's a story there?

For Non-Practitioners Only..........

Accounting for Investments (fixed income securities and interest rate derivatives a practitioners guide - LOL ) is not very usable for US Fixed Income Accounting Professionals.

It completely ignores 95% of US Institutional Holdings (MBS Passthroughs, CMO's, Asset-Backed Securities, Muni's, Variable Rate bonds etc..). Basically anything that might be more challenging to account for.
Same for US Accounting Methods ( standards ) for Discount Accretion / Premium Amortization.

It does not cover Amortization schedules, Sinking funds, Callables, Putables and Convertible bonds.

Examples are not very specific.

Same for Interest Rate Swaps - not nearly enough detail.

Also about 200 pages are General Ledger printouts ......... Not readable by humans for sure.

Perhaps an Excel based Examples would be more useful.

About the Author
Dr Kandice Kottke-Marchant, MD PhD, Section Head, Hemostasis and Thrombosis, Department of Clinical Pathology, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, USA and President, International Society of Laboratory Hematology. She is also a Professor of Pathology at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications in the field of haemostasis, is an international expert on platelet testing and aspirin resistance, and has served on review panels from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), College of American Pathologists (CAP), ISO/TC212 and North American Specialized Coagulation Laboratory Association (NASCOLA). She has been a driving force to increase the international visibility and impact of the ISLH. She has been responsible for running the ISLH annual Symposia since 2002. Due to her involvement in haemostasis and the ISLH, Dr. Kottke-Marchant will be uniquely positioned to serve as one of the co-Editors of the Textbook of Laboratory Hematology.

Elkin Simson, MD, PCAP, FACSP is the Medical Director of the Center for Clinical Laboratories and Hematology Laboratory at the Mount Sinai Hospital. He is also Associate Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York, NY, USA. Dr. Simson was formerly the Vice-President for Medical and Scientific Affairs at Technicon Instruments Corporation, where he participated in the development of the first automated haematology analyzers to combine the CBC and WBC differential into a single instrument. Dr Simson is the Past President of the ISLH and is Vice-President of the International Council for Standardization in Hematology (ICSH). He has been Chairman of the Hematology Area Committee of NCCLS (now CLSI), a member of Council of the National Reference System for the Clinical Laboratory (NRSCL) and the Hematology and Quality Improvement Subcommittees of the NCCCLS. He was a member of the Hematology and Pathology Advisory Panel of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Due to his long-time involvement in haematology automation and standards organizations, Dr. Simson is an idea co-editor.

The proposed section editors are chosen from international experts in their respective fields; most have also been long-time ISLH members who have been faculty at one or more ISLH Symposia and who have been repeatedly recognized as outstanding speakers and contributors by the participants. Dr Bruce Davis is one of the co-founders of the ISLH and has a long history of involvement in developing automated cellular and flow cytometric technologies. Professor Alberto Orfao from Spain is one of the world’s foremost experts on flow cytometry. Professor Samuel Machin is currently President of the British Society of Haematology and is an international authority on haemostasis testing. Stefanie McFadden is a medical technologist who is sought after as a consultant for laboratory management and informatics issues.

Good but not perfect

This book is focusing on the principles of laboratory haematology but you can't start using this book without having the fundamentals of haematology. The price is overrated.
