Theory of small-group interacton and verification of the general theory of action

This landmark study of small groups contains reports from a group of action theorists led by Talcott Parsons. Parsons derived the basic framework of the theory of action from these empirical observations of how people behave in small groups when they are presented with a task. All groups divide between instrumental members, on the one hand; and consummatory members on the other hand. The instrumental members are the task leader, who explains the task and conducts meetings and the members of the group who assist in providing resources like suggestions to the leader. The consummatory members are the inevitable clowns and antagonists who derail and disturb the task process and the inevitable passive members who simply go along with the process or sleep. Instrumental-consummatory is one axis of conduct that appears in all small groups. The second axis is internal-external. The instrumental members are oriented to getting the task done; that is, to the purposes that are external to the group itself. The consummatory members are oriented to the group process; that is, internally. Instrumental members attain the goals and gather the resources. Consummatory members communicate the feelings of the members to the task leader. Clowning and antagonism, for instance, help keep the group on task, even if the consummatory types may annoy the instrumental types. Other studies in the book apply these concepts to how people behave in families and other social structures. These two axes produced the whole framework of the next 25 years of the theory of action: adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and pattern maintenance. People who are theoretically aware will find this empirical verification of the theoretical structure rewarding if only to understand the bizarre behavior people in meetings. Robert F. Bales, the second author, went on to develop a major management organization consulting firm with his work. What Parsons and his group began as the very opaque 'Toward a general theory of action' came to life in this amazing work.

Beautiful prose, but doesn't fully live up to it's potential.

Sky is trying to find her place. In the world, in her personal relationships and even in her family. Her mother left long ago, pursuing dreams of art and recognition leaving her caring but alcoholic father to raise herself and her eccentric younger brother Gully. The one constant in life has been 'The Wishing Well', their beloved vintage record shop. But with a developer sniffing around for ways to claim the property even that is on shaky ground. With her best friend Nancy drifting further away and her new crush Luke dealing with a secret tragedy it's up to Sky to figure out a way to hold it all together, or decide to let it all go and begin anew.

This book had a lot of potential but never quite lived up to it. With one main mystery surrounding the plot line the other storylines felt at times like filler, something you want to get through quickly to get back to the real story. There are also many great side characters that I would have loved to see more of that don't get the attention they deserve. That said, Simmone Howell fills the pages with beautiful prose and an intelligent heroine, making this a worthwhile read and certainly an author I'll be following in the future.

An 'Empire Records' style book? YES!

There's this movie which happens to be my favorite movie in the world called Empire Records. It is one of the most brilliant young adult portrayals of work dynamics and happens to be perfectly intertwined with music in story of a record shop and the employees that work there. It marked my youth and it marked my life and I've seen it more time than I can count. So, as an avid YA reader, when I read the words Empire Records in the blurb of a YA book, it had to be mine instantly.

Australian authors have some secrets they don't seem to share with anyone. Every Aussie book I've read has unparalleled spot-on dialogue and even if they are realistic they have a magical detached quality that seems to attach the reader that much more. This book was fantastic and yes it revived all the Empire Records feelings and that was amazing to experience.

Summary:
Sky Martin narrates her tale of dealing with those around her and growing up. Her dad owns a record shop and is an alcoholic. Her mother left them to pursue a rock career and has no interaction with them. Her younger brother fancies himself a detective and is determined to solve two mysteries that go through the book: vandalism and abduction. An older girl that Sky is friends with, and Luke the new hire. Sky relates her feelings of interactions with all of these characters intermixed with discussions of life and the crimes going on around her.

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed this movie in an 80's teen movie kind of way. The narrator has the same witty voice that you expect in those long loved movies and each character is extremely flawed without the promise of perfection. I love how this novel shows just what is without the ideal clouding everything. The all over the place writing matches with the narrator and adds more to her character. Overall, I would recommend this book to adults that want to reminisce about their teenage years, and older children that are able to handle the scatterbrained aspect.

Her Masjesty: Haydon, is back with the newest installment!

Almost seven years ago, Haydon introduced Rhapsody, whom became a Namer and befriended two half-breeds on the island of Serendair. People all over the world fell in love with the Symphony of Ages, and the series quickly became a World Wide Bestseller! Haydon created memorable characters, like Rhapsody, Grunthor, and Achmed the snake whom traveled to the tree of Sagia and escaped the destruction of the Lost Island of Serendair.
In 2006, Haydon introduced a new hero, a new character which we had heard of from Requiem for the Sun, and The Assassin King of the SOA series. Ven Polypheme, the Nain explorer who went on to write: The Book of All Human Knowledge, and All the World's Magic. Which takes place in the Second Age: The Broken World. (Arrival of Man whom dominate as the surpreme beings after the Racian Wars against the F'Dor [demonic fire spirits]).
While The Lost Journals of Ven Polypheme are more for the 'Young at Heart,'we can still enjoy Haydon's wonderful skill of creating memorable characters and her wondeful imagination. We don't see a very detailed plot, (of course, this series is for young readers) but we do get to enjoy exploring Serendair more. Since Haydon only showed us Easton and Sagia in Rhapsody. Which is one reason why I bought the book series in the first place, I wanted to learn more about Serendair.
But, in the bargain I grew to love Ven Polypheme and his close friends. The Floating Island was a real treat! And the magic in it seemed so more original and familar than the epic Mythical atmosphere in the SOA series. The novel was a nice, easy read and didn't cause me to have a headache afterwards. Nevetheless, if you are over 13 and haven't checked out the SOA series, you should do so. But, anyway back to the real reason why I'm here.
The Thief Queen's Daughter brings Ven back to life. The only problem is that, first, The King of Serendair wishes Ven to travel into The Gated City (a place where long ago thieves lived without following the laws and there decendants are not allowed to leave the city) and is a very dangerous place. And two, The King of Serendair fires Ven infront of the entire court (for a reason which you will learn later on) and the Albatross that was always following Ven turns out to be watching him by somebody afar...
Ven than journeys into The Thieves Market with his friends, Char, Saeli, Nick, and Clem to find out about a treasure in the Inner Market when he ask Madame Sharra a question, and the Seren reads from The Stolen Deck (dragons scales that appear gray, but turned in the light, reveal there true hue) for Ven, three scales, and Ven finds out three things. One inludes that something will be stolen from him by The Thief Queen herself.
So begins the second tale of The Lost Journals of Ven Polypheme. I wish not to spoil anymore than I had. So your going to have to read the book for yourself. This series is a delight, and I'm already looking forward to the next installment (The Dragon's Lair) and Haydon's next novel in the Symphony of Ages.

I received a free review copy of this book. It’s obviously a continuation, but wasn’t too hard to get into. Things are minimally explained as necessary as they come up. I found it hard to tell the characters apart, aside from Ida (“the thief”), Saeli (“the quiet girl”), and the narrator. The others don’t seem to be well developed or memorable. Maybe they got their distinguishing moments in an earlier book? Here, for the most part, they seem to be unnecessary backdrops, generic placeholders needed to speak lines or be spoken to.
I liked that there are multiple races of beings, and this is an accepted fact, so they’re accepted as nothing unusual. There’s some worldbuilding present here, and it seems to be continuing from a prior volume. I couldn’t get a good idea of what anyone looks like, though, or how they differ from humans, due to a dearth of descriptive language. For instance, someone makes a remark midway through about the narrator being fat. Are they just being rude? I can’t tell!
The cover (of my copy) is deceptive – dragons may help sell books, but they don’t even get a mention here until the very end! I did like the helpful curriculum notes and discussion questions provided in the back of the book, though.

Even better than the first, if that's possible

I loved the Floating Island. It was one of the best books of any genre that I have read in a long time, and reminded me of my favorite childhood tomes, with the right amount of magic and adventure, and probably the most likable hero I've encountered. Second books are usually very disappointing, especially when the first is as amazing as that one was, so I was shocked and delighted to discover that The Thief Queen's daughter, which I've awaited anziously since I read the last page of the Floating Island, is even more engagingly magical.

This is a series I recommend, as a teacher, parent, and proud perennial kid, to everyone and anyone. There is nothing offensive about it, but the lessons woven artfully into the plot are good ones for anybody to adopt. The characters, especially Felonia the Thief Queen, will stay in your memory long after the last page of this book is done. I am now anxiously awaiting The Dragon's Lair, the next of Ven's adventures. The little trailer for it at the end hooked me immediately.
