One of the lowest quality for DK
By ScienceThinker
I like books published by DK. I really do. So, every time I order one I have high expectations: I expect great art work and great informational content. So, when this book arrived, I was very disappointed with its low quality. The art work is good but not great; certainly not among DK's best. But this is not the main problem with the book. The real problem is the many setbacks with its content: (1) As has been reported by another reviewer, the text is indeed superficial and fragmented. No real information is provided regarding the engineering feat realized with a particular construction. (2) Only some of the historical selections are good. Many important ones have been ignored. And many of the ones included make the reader wonder why they have been selected. (3) A similar comment (similar to the previous one) applies to the engineers selected. (4) Related to the the previous two setbacks is the impression created to the reader as he/she reads the book that the editor-in-chief has not done an extensive historical investigation and he has not fully understood either the historical significance or impact of the objects. (For example, what problem did the Archimedes screw pump solve and what was its impact?) The book is just a collection of pictures and easily found pieces of information. (5) The book covers the various time eras disproportionally. As we come closer to our time, more and more selections and engineers are showcased. However, many objects were natural creations of their time as science advanced and presented absolutely no real challenge in their realization.
Without trying to diminish the effort placed by the editor-in-chief, I tend to believe that the lack of serious engineering content can be traced back in his background or, more precisely, in the lack of background. He is an accomplished writer, photographer and broadcaster but he is not an engineer; he has thus failed to understand the `essence' of engineering, something which is absolutely necessary for such a project. (This hypothesis is supported by other DK books which were given to editors with relevant background and have been outstanding.)

High hopes ... dashed
By Camber
Being an experienced engineer who's interested in the history and social context of the profession, I ordered this book without hesitation and had high hopes. Having now spent some time with the book, I sadly must report that I'm disappointed.
The historical and global sweep are excellent, and the book's visual presentation is beautiful (usually the case with DK books), so the book looks very promising if you just peruse it. The effort of the publisher, editor, and authors is evident. But the problem is that when you actually read the book, the discussion is superficial and fragmented. The information provided feels like a lot of trivia, and little insight is gained regarding the engineering achievements themselves, nor the motivations and thought processes of the engineers who created them. Also, I question the selection of engineers in this book - yes, difficult choices have to be made, but too many leading engineers were displaced by lesser ones.
The bottom line is that this book clearly wasn't written by and for engineers. General readers may get more out of it, but that audience would also be much better served by a book which does more justice to engineering, such as Engineering Legends: Great American Civil Engineers: (32 Profiles of Inspiration and Achievement). This is a 'coffee table book' in the negative sense of the term.

Nice Coffie Table Book
By Mason
I really liked this book by DK publishing. It had all the Great Engineers from the past 5000 years, more or less. While it did provide a lot information about quite a few people, it none the less missed some pretty important information about what they did. Other people have commented on this topic so i'm not totally alone on my thoughts. However I do understand that only so much information can be on just two pages. I will be using one of my favorite engineers, Nikola Tesla, as an example. They did state several of his important accomplishments like his improvements in wireless electricity, and his Induction Motor. But they did not list things that led him to his career for example. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in inventions, architecture, boring old concrete or anything in those regards.
