About the Author
Laura King did her undergraduate work at Kenyon College, where, an English major, she declared a second major, in psychology, during the second semester of her junior year. She completed her A.B. in English with high honors and distinction and in psychology with distinction in 1986. Laura then did graduate work at Michigan State University and the University of California, Davis, receiving her Ph.D. in personality psychology in 1991. Laura began her career at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, moving to the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 2001, where she is now a professor. In addition to seminars in the development of character, social psychology, and personality psychology, she has taught undergraduate lecture courses in introductory psychology, introduction to personality psychology, and social psychology. At SMU, she received six different teaching awards, including the “M” award for “sustained excellence” in 1999. At the University of Missouri, she received the Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Research and Creative Activity in 2004. Her research, which has been funded by the National Institutes for Mental Health, has focused on a variety of topics relevant to the question of what it is that makes for a good life. She has studied goals, life stories, happiness, well-being, and meaning in life. In general, her work reflects an enduring interest in studying what is good and healthy in people. In 2001, her research accomplishments were recognized by a Templeton Prize in positive psychology. Laura’s research (often in collaboration with undergraduate and graduate students) has been published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, Cognition and Emotion, the Journal of Personality, and other publications . A new paper on the place of regrets in maturity is forthcoming in the American Psychologist. Currently editor-in-chief of the Journal of Research in Personality, Laura has also served as associate editor of Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, as well as on numerous grant panels. She has edited or co-edited special sections of the Journal of Personality and the American Psychologist. In “real life,” Laura is an accomplished cook and enjoys listening to music (mostly jazz vocalists and singer-songwriters), gardening, and chasing Sam, her 3-year-old son.

About the Author
Jazz Jennings is a trans woman, YouTube celebrity, spokesmodel, activist, and author of the picture book I Am Jazz. She has a docu-series about her life also called I Am Jazz on TLC, which started airing in July 2015. A walk in someone else's shoes.

Since the transgender issue entered politics via NC's HB2 "bathroom bill", I chose this book as an attempt to get some understanding of the issue. I think the book serves that purpose well, offering a frank, presumably realistic, and relatively a-political insight into the struggles of a transgender person. I found it neither preachy nor defensive, it just "tells it like it is." It may be the closest a "straight" person can come to "walking a mile in the other person's shoes."
I would wish all our politicians would read a book such as this, or even better, talk to some actual persons with non-typical gender idenitty, before passing legislation in areas in which they have no actual experience.

Not quite the person seen on TV

Got the book for my daughter who watched the TV series about Jazz's life. Lots of photographs, and anecdotes on transgender issues she faced.. I must say, since I read it too, Jazz comes across a little less likeable than on TV. I think she's a great kid, very smart and articulate, but seemed a little vain and self-centered here.She is a role model and a very brave caring girl so I was sad to feel this way.She comes across as very mature, caring and proactive on TV and this didn't come across quite as strongly on the printed page.

Informative and touching

Really glad I got to read this book. I learned a lot about jazz but also about some of the hardships transgendered kids have to go through. Even though you can tell this was written by a 15 year old girl, it reads exceptionally well. For anyone who wants to know more about the trans youth and is willing to try to understand or learn more or ways you can help. Lots of awesome information and links included at the end of the book too in order to do more research on your own.

A worthy book for the careful reader

This book is written in a skillful manner and with pedagogy in mind. The authors have given explanations of the classical works of Rayleigh and other great physicists in ways that are better than the original papers themselves. I read many of the chapters (essays), deriving the intermediate results and like the authors applications of the Rayleigh work principle (as they call it) to a variety of problems. The second chapter on domain and surface perturbations, and the associated Appendix are the best I have seen anywhere and do what no other book has done thus far. The authors explain here how to write equations at distorted surfaces in terms of convenient reference surfaces and answer a lot of subtle questions in the process. The second chapter seems to be the basis for the entire book.
The energy arguments in the chapters on jets and Rayleigh Taylor are really nice. The chapters on rotating liquid bridges, solidification, precipitation, and electrodeposition contain a lot of new material. The subject matter is explained in physical terms with pictures and predictive calculations are then made that support the physical arguments. This book is great for intermediate graduate students and teachers who like to use a pen and a tablet. I have read several books on stability of fluid flow and this book is among the best. The book is best read in a research group and many interesting ideas will emanate. A worthy buy!

Writing a book for the sake of writing a book?

This book reads as if the authors were trying to teach themselves interfacial instability. The problems are old worn-out, and the "essays" (each chapter, that is) are simply re-working of what is in the technical literature. The book does have some value, and should be useful to graduate students, but the authors could have chosen many problems of current interest with rich applications and pedagogical value. The topics chosen are fron classic papers (Lord Rayleigh, Saffman & Taylor, Chandrasekhar, etc.). Get Xerox copies of the original papers and save a bundle! The book is not worth the price (roughly $....)

This book is an excellent book in interfacial instability. The problems presented are not new but they are still of great interest. The essays, i.e. the chapters, contain good explanations for some great works done by Lord Rayleigh,Chandrasekhar and others. This book is very useful for graduate students. It is worth the price.

Moreover, Islamic law travels with a multiplicity of voices, and it is this complex hybridity (a fragmented and disjointed Mahr) which will be mediated through Western law. Returning to the overarching concept of liberalism, the book proposes that distributive consequences rather than recognition occupy central place in the evaluation of the legal options available to Muslim women upon divorce.

About the Author
Pascale Fournier is Associate Professor of Law at the University of Ottawa and a Research Associate at the University's Human Rights Research and Education Centre (HRREC). Professor Fournier received her LL.B in Law (1997) from Laval University, her LL.M. (2000) from the University of Toronto and her S.J.D. (2007) from Harvard Law School. Before arriving at Harvard, she served as Law Clerk to Justice L'Heureux-Dubé at the Supreme Court of Canada. Her scholarship focuses on comparative family law, Islam and Judaism in Europe and North America, constitutional law and freedom of religion, migration in the context of globalization, and the relationship between multiculturalism and gender. Her current research project, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, investigates the migration of two forms of religious divorces (the Jewish Get and the Islamic Talaq) in Canada, France, Britain and Germany, and the effects of such migration on Jewish and Muslim women. Pascale has lectured at the State University of Haiti, McGill University, the University for Peace in Costa Rica and the Institute for Women's Studies and Research in Iran. She recently served as an expert consultant on issues of gender and Islamic law for the United Nations Development Programme. unded the skins

A play along from the Long Time Drummer with Frank Sinatra using Franks charts. The text is Good work for some sight reading and playing along. It would have been nice to have two versions of the songs, one mixed with out drums. The other some what disappointing thing is the lack of count ins. I guess the positive thing is you get see what Irv played in relation to the information on the chart.

Great Book.

Irv Cottler has long been one of my favourite drummers and it was obvious that Frank Sinatra appreciated him too, after all he used Irv Cottler as his drummer for over 30 years. Frank was not a task master as such but he did know what was what and he obviously trusted Irv Cottler to be his "on the road" and live performance drummer because he new what to do. The charts here are good solid material played in the "Sinatra style" with a band led and arrangements by Torrie Zito with Irv in the drum chair. The supporting CD is well recorded and the book is supported by an introduction by Frank Sinatra as to the reasons why he liked Irv Cottler to be "his" drummer. This is good value and Irv Cottler plays great as usual.
