Marked by hard-core, brutal sex scenes, this gritty tale is not for the squeamish, but the author's name will stir patron demand. Background: Qu'bon is a Kansas City, MO, crime figure and takes nothing from anybody, including his main woman, Lady. When she drunkenly borrows his black-on-black 72 Cutlass for a cruise, Qu'bon grabs her in a choke hold. After their fallout, Qu'bon hooks up with several different women, hitting them for quick sexual releases and moving on. Carter crowds his story with setup after setup, but Qu'bon learns it's difficult, but not impossible, to extract revenge from inside a prison cell. --The Library Journal

About the Author
Quentin Carter is a 30-year-old native of Kansas City, Missouri. Currently, Quentin is serving a 10-year sentence in federal prison under the harsh crack cocaine law. It was while in prison that Quentin felt inspired to write. His strong characters often reflect his own experience on the streets, and he is an inspiration to other inmates, as well as those on the outside. He is scheduled to be released in 2008. Each of Quentin's titles, Hoodwinked, In Cahootz, Contagious and Amongst Thieves have topped bestseller lists. Stained Cotton is Quentin's fifth novel with Triple Crown, and perhaps the most highly anticipated. In the future, Quentin hopes to grow as an author and become a writer of multiple genres.

Such a disappointment...

I've read a couple of his other books, so I bought this one based on that -- and the rave reviews. Makes me wonder about some of the reviewers and what they look for in a book. I like drama as well as the next person, but there were so many situations that simply weren't believable in this book. It was an insult to my intelligence, but I forced myself to finish it. I gave it way when I was done. When a book is good, I keep it! Complete waste of money!

Quentin Carter, has done it once again and has been my favorite author from the very start. Stained Cotton was a very good read and i enjoyed it from start to finish and can't wait for another Quentin Carter novel... Hopefully, it'll be VERY SOON. It is now 2010 and I am still waiting for another book from Mr. Carter to drop... Lets get it POPPIN...

About the Author

Michael Blue has been the pastor of The Door of Hope Christian Church since 1992. He also serves as the presiding prelate of the Christian Covenant Fellowship of Ministries. He is the recipient of several ecclesiastical and community service honors, and was awarded the distinction of Doctor of Humanities by Francis Marion University, his alma mater, in 2010. Bishop Blue is a disciple, husband, father, psalmist, and student of the Word.

Building Credibility in Leadership is a great book for leaders in the secular and spiritual arenas. The information given provides great guidance to leaders of all ages and types. The development of leaders is one of the most important vehicles to ensure the continuation of an organization. It is a task that takes knowledge, skill and wisdom. This book offers it all!

Reading this book has assisted me in my personal and professional life as a Christian who operates in primary and secondary leadership roles as a minister, counselor, mentor and entrepreneur. An excellent book for anyone interested in communicating.

Deborah Tannen has written an excellent book analyzing theverbal interaction between men and women. I highly recommend it toanyone. For many years I have been only generally aware of some of the symptoms she describes, mostly through personal communication problems that arose in my marriage. After reading her book, I now have a much better understanding of these challenging problems of differing perspective and I hope I can even change my reactions when these problems reoccur. I even note on pg. 201 (page numbers throughout refer to the Hardcover Edition) that the author herself, "as a result of doing this research, learned not to use machine-gun questions or cooperative overlapping with people who don't respond well -- a tangible benefit of understanding conversational style."
I don't believe her book is at all one-sided. It presents examples of how some people (often women) feel they are always being interrupted and not allowed to present their views. It also describes how a male speaker, through his style, fails to get a professional group's attention or credit for bringing up a major point -- that is then later repeated by another speaker, who refers to the earlier speaker but still gets all the credit.
In order for others to gain an appreciation of this book, I quote below from several selections.
WHO DOES MORE OF THE TALKING, AND UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES?
"Who talks more, then, women or men? The seemingly contradictory evidence is reconciled by the difference between what I call public and private speaking. More men feel comfortable doing `public speaking,' while more women feel comfortable doing `private' speaking. Another way of capturing these differences is by using the terms report-talk and rapport-talk.
"For most women, the language of conversation is primarily a language of rapport: a way of establishing connections and negotiating relationships. Emphasis is placed on displaying similarities and matching experiences. From childhood, girls criticize peers who try to stand out or appear better than others." (pg. 76, 77)
"From childhood, men learn to use talking as a way to get and keep attention. So they are more comfortable speaking in larger groups made up of people they know less well -- in the broadest sense, `public speaking.' But even the most private situations can be approached like public speaking, more like giving a report than establishing rapport." (pg. 77)
"Many men honestly do not know what women want, and women honestly do not know why men find what they wand so hard to comprehend and deliver." (pg. 81)
JUDGMENTS ABOUT WHY PEOPLE TALK AND DON'T TALK.
"For girls, talk is the glue that holds relationships together. Boys' relationships are held together primarily by activities: doing things together, or talking about activities such as sports or, later, politics." (pg. 85)
"Women and men are inclined to understand each other in terms of their own styles because we assume we all live in the same world. [A] young man in [Thomas Fox' college] writing class noticed that his female peers refused to speak with authority. He imagined the reason to be that they feared being wrong. For him, the point was knowledge, a matter of individual ability. It did not occur to him that what they feared was not being wrong, but being offensive. For them, the point was connection: their relation to the group." (pg. 179)
WHICH IS A BETTER LEARNING EXPERIENCE: BOYS PLAYING GAMES WITH COMPLEX RULES OR GIRLS HAVING VERY FEW, IF ANY, EXPLICIT RULES IN THEIR GAMES?
"[I]t is not that the boys' behavior is more complex in general. Rather, boys and girls are learning to handle complexity in different arenas -- boys in terms of complex rules and activities, girls in terms of [non explicit] complex networks of relationships, and complex ways of using language to mediate those relationships." (pg. 181)
WHEN DO WE LEARN TO BE DIFFERENT?
"If it is fascinating to see the source of adult patterns in second-graders, it boggles the mind to see them in three-year-olds. No wonder it is hard for men and women to understand each other's point of view: We have been looking at the view from different vantage points for as long as we have been looking." (pg. 257)
There is another quote on a page that I can't remember that goes something like "second-grade girls already have more in common with 10th grade girls than they do with second-grade boys."
INTERRUPTIONS AND NOT GETTING AN EQUAL CHANCE TO TALK.
"[I]nadvertent interruptions -- and the impression of domination -- came about because the friends had different conversational styles. I call these styles `high considerateness' and `high involvement,' because the former gave priority to being considerate to others by not imposing, and the latter gave priority to showing enthusiastic involvement. Some apparent interruptions occurred because high-considerateness speakers expected longer pauses between speaking turns. While they were waiting for the proper pause, the high involvement speakers got the impression they had nothing to say and filled in to avoid an uncomfortable silence." (pg. 196)
THE EFFECTS OF FOREIGN CULTURES.
"If cultural differences are likely to cause misjudgment in personal settings, they are certain to do so in international ones. I would wager that the much-publicized antipathy between Nancy Reagan and Raisa Gorbachev resulted from cultural differences in conversational style. According to Nancy Reagan, `From the moment we met, she talked and talked and talked -- so much that I could barely get a word in, edgewise or otherwise.' I suspect that if anyone asked Raisa Gorbachev, she would say she'd been wondering why her American counterpart never said anything." (pg. 207)
Another example of "foreign" cultures relates to Americans from different backgrounds, not only of obvious ethnic differences, but even, for example, simply from different parts of America. On page 201 Tannen points out the different backgrounds and conversational styles of Jewish New Yorkers (and many New Yorkers who are not Jewish), who "have high-involvement styles and are often perceived as interrupting in conversation with speakers from different backgrounds, such as Californians. But [on the other hand] many Californians expect shorter pauses than many midwesterners or New Englanders, so in conversations between them, the Californians end up interrupting. Just as [the author] was considered extremely polite when [she] lived in New York but was sometimes perceived as rude in California, a polite Californian was shocked and hurt to find herself accused of rudeness when she moved to Vermont."
Still another example of cultural difference is that of an American tourist in Turkey trying to refuse a street merchant. "She found herself holding a stone head, and when she told him politely that she did not want it, he would not take it back. Instead, he thrust forward another one, which she also automatically accepted. Since the man would not take either head back, the only path to escape she could envision was offering to buy them. She cut his price in half and hoped he'd refuse so she could move on. Instead, he agreed to drop the price and she dropped the two heads in her tote. But as she handed him the money, he handed her a third head. ... Seeing no alternative, she paid for the third head and stalked off -- shaken and angry. When ... she showed her purchases to custom officials [at the ship, they] had her arrested and thrown into jail for trying to smuggle out a national treasure. The third head was a genuine antiquity." (pg. 281)
THE BOTTOM LINE IN ALL OF TANNEN'S RESEARCH IS:
"We all want, above all, to be heard -- but not merely to be heard. We want to be understood -- heard for what we think we are saying, for what we know we mean. With increased understanding of the ways women and men use language should come a decrease in frequency of the complaint `You don't understand.' END

a must-read for everyone who talks to the opposite sex

This book can change your life, but only if both you and your spouse read it. Or a good handbook for singles, hoping to figure out just what exactly that other strange species is really saying. What is most impressive is how even handedly Dr. Tannen treats female- and male-oriented communication styles, noting that neither style is inherently better, but just profoundly different, and that understanding the basis for how women and men communicate so differently can really lay a groundwork for avoiding lots of misunderstandings. This is absolutely true. As a man, I am amazed that Dr. Tannen has such a solid and objective understanding of male-pattern communication styles. I certainly learned a lot about how women communicate, and thus have avoided perhaps 50% of the misunderstandings in my marriage. Now if I can only get my lovely spouse to "just read the book" (which alas has turned into my final defense on more than one occaision), we can eliminate the other 50%!

It may not be a guy thing (or a girl thing)

One of the things I've noticed about books like this is that the author comes up with a "matrix" of different, usually opposing, characteristics (in this case, human behaviour), then uses that matrix to explain *all* the differences in behaviour. Here Tannen expresses every described conflict between men and women *solely* in terms of gender differences. SOme are, some aren't.
Books like this sound very plausible when you are reading them, but then if you read another similar book, you notice that the second author uses an entirely different set of "parameters" for their own matrix (which is quite plausible when you're reading it as well). Trouble is, the two matrices that sound so compelling are totally incompatible and in fact contradict each other.
Moral of the story: it doesn't have to be accurate, it just has to be plausible enough to get a publishing deal.
Good case in point: Tannen mentions the trouble she had with a new computer purchase. The first time she took it back to the shop, the repairman was very unhelpful and spouted a bunch of gibberish at her. Later, she took the computer back and talked to one of the saleswomen, who solved her problem. Conclusion: men are unfriendly and one-uppers, while women are helpful and nurturing.
Problem is, I've known many women who act like the uncommunicative repairman. And I've seen many males who are very helpful and can easily help solve people's problems.
So this wasn't a male-female difference that Tannen experienced, it was simply that the first person she encountered (who happened to be male) was a very technically oriented type; he probably wasn't trying to be rude or unhelpful, he was just not too great at verbal interaction. Likewise, the second person Tannen met (who happened to be female) was in sales, a "people person". She was the type of person who is empathetic and able to communicate ideas and understand where someone else is struggling.
There are many other scenarios in this book that have other explanations other than guy thing/girl thing. So a very large caveat if you want to buy this: the author isn't really trying to accurately *explain* why a conflict happened, she's just illustrating the central thesis of her book. A little more objectivity would have been quite welcome.

About the Author
Sahana Udupa is a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Goettingen, Germany. Her research interests have evolved around anthropological explorations of news media, global urbanization, social media, and transnational religious politics. She has been awarded fellowships and grants by the Annenberg School of Communication (University of Pennsylvania), the Max Planck Society (Germany), and the National Institute of Advanced Studies (India). Her research is published in premier academic journals including American Ethnologist and Media, Culture and Society. She is actively involved in international academic collaborations across India, Europe and North America. She carries with her several years of experience working as a bilingual journalist in India, and her enduring relations with the journalistic community.

Edgar Huntly Memoirs of a Sleep-Walker By Charles Brockden Brown Edgar Huntly, Or, Memoirs of a Sleepwalker is a 1799 novel by the American author Charles Brockden Brown. Edgar Huntly, a young man who lives with his uncle and sisters (his only remaining family) on a farm outside Philadelphia, is determined to learn who murdered his friend Waldegrave. Walking near the elm tree under which Waldegrave was killed late one night, Huntly sees Clithero, a servant from a neighboring farm, half-dressed, digging in the ground and weeping loudly. Huntly concludes that Clithero may be the murderer. He also concludes that Clithero is sleepwalking. Huntly decides to follow Clithero when he sleep walks. Clithero leads Huntly through rough countryside, but all this following doesn't lead to Huntly learning much about the murder. Eventually, Huntly confronts Clithero when they are both awake and demands that he confess. Clithero does confess, but not to Waldegrave's murder. Instead he tells a complicated story about his life in Ireland, where he believes he was responsible for the death of a woman who was his patron, after which he fled to Pennsylvania. Clithero claims to know nothing about Waldegrave's murder. One night, soon after Huntly goes to sleep in his own bed, he wakes up in a completely dark place made of rock, which he eventually determines is a cave. He is hungry, thirsty, and feels as though he's been beaten. He is attacked by a panther, which he manages to kill and then drinks some of its blood and eats some of its flesh. Looking for his way out of the cave, he finds that some Lenni Lenape, an Indian tribe, are holding a white girl prisoner at the mouth of the cave. Edgar kills the guard and rescues the girl. In their flight, he kills more Indians, who seem to have begun a war. By the end of the novel, Edgar learns (among other things) that he himself has been sleepwalking, that Clithero was indeed not involved in Waldegrave's murder, that Waldegrave was murdered by a Lenni Lenape Indian, perhaps one he himself had killed, and that he and his fiancee are both destined to inherit nothing.

Charles Brockden Brown (January 17, 1771 – February 22, 1810), an American novelist, historian, and editor of the Early National period, is generally regarded by scholars as the most ambitious and accomplished US novelist before James Fenimore Cooper. He is the most frequently studied and republished practitioner of the "early American novel," or the US novel between 1789 and roughly 1820. Although Brown was by no means the first American novelist, as some early criticism claimed, the breadth and complexity of his achievement as a writer in multiple genres (novels, short stories, essays and periodical writings of every sort, poetry, historiography, reviews) makes him a crucial figure in US literature and culture of the 1790s and first decade of the 19th century, and a significant public intellectual in the wider Atlantic print culture and public sphere of the era of the French Revolution.

The Frankfurt Institute consisted entirely of a band of rogue communists that were imported by bankers during World War II, some of whom were placed on retainer to work within the banker-controlled Central Intelligence Agency during the 1950's and 60's. These were the "Sugar Daddy's" who inspired student violence, race riots, and a full-blown sexual revolution during the 1960's to destabilize our people through social chaos so that the bankers could set about picking our pockets. The overall goal was to turn human reason on its head and to destroy all that predated their revolution-because "nothing that existed in America was deemed worth saving."

This is an EXTREMELY important book.

Who murdered America and how they did it!!

This is a textbook of what happened to the United States after World War II and who the guilty parties are who trashed our nation. 761 pages and it is well worth the cost. People in our town are reading this and declaring that they are no longer confused and that everything now makes sense to them. The assassination of John F. Kennedy was a coup d'etat by the CIA and Treasury Department Secret Service supervisors---on behalf of the very bankers who took over our government and have now robbed us with their credit card loansharking, bogus mortgage lending and finally the trillion-dollar "bale-outs." We are nothing but their work-slaves. They have replicated the economic model of Nazi Germany in a globalized marketplace, and our politics have been nothing but a corrupt two-party scam ever since they murdered President Kennedy. "Of the bankers. By the bankers. And only for the bankers."

Only one stilted review for such a momentous book?

This book reads as a conspiracy theorist's dream novel. Over-the-top conspiracies abound, including the one that has been unproven for almost 48 years, that the President of the United States was assassinated by a cabal. In 48 years, were that true, proof would have surfaced. Nothing remains secret in the 21st century. That America has problems and desperately needs help, there is no doubt. That our nation is the victim of such a massive conspiracy is insulting to the American people. Comparing the United States to Germany of the 1930's is absurd to the extreme.

Even the one other review reads as though it is written by someone from the 18th century: "Publius" has no other reviews but this one, and seeks to profit from the fame of the earlier "Publius", the pseudonym for James Madison, Alexander Hamilton and John Jay as they wrote The Federalist Papers. A pseudonym is fine for an age when there is real personal danger in speaking out as was the case with the British Overlords of the colonies. However, in 2011, all it does is conjure up suspicion that the review was written by someone from the publishers, Morven House, and therefore has a limited value in evaluating the credibility of a book.

Having said that, with all my negative opinions about the book, the author is exercising his American freedom to question the system. I think he is 40 miles out in left field. And, that is what makes this nation great, that he can write such things and NOT be in personal danger from all those who he feels are destroying our nation. I am very, very concerned about how close this book comes to endorsing insurrection when he writes the situation "would fully justify the same course of action that once was advocated by all of our nation's founding fathers on July 4, 1776."
