Grade 3-6?A handsomely illustrated book that serves as a useful antidote to the Disney interpretation of the Greek hero's life. It tells of Hercules's birth (his semi-divine origin earned him Hera's hatred, thus dooming him to tragedy) and death, but focuses on the famous labors he performed as penance for slaying his wife and children in a Hera-induced fit of madness. The story sticks fairly closely to the myths as set forth in Edith Hamilton's Mythology (Little, Brown, 1950), although the lion that provides him the signature pelt was not the Nemean lion of his second labor as here, but an earlier beast, the Thespian lion (ancient Greece seems to have been fairly infested with lions). The hero's personality comes through, especially his impulsiveness, which often causes harm to those he loves, as does his strength and physical courage. Balit's illustrations are stylized and powerful, done in rich colors and metallic gold ink. For some reason, she portrays Hercules with his upper arms and torso encircled with black bindings, perhaps to emphasize his muscles; his face, however, seems broodingly introspective, showing him as the tragic figure he was. Both Doris Gates's Mightiest of Mortals (Viking, 1984) and Bernard Evslin's Hercules (Morrow, 1984; o.p.) give more depth and detail to the hero's life; however, they lack the full-color illustrations that make this retelling so appealing.?Pam Gosner, formerly at Maplewood Memorial Library, NJ

Unlike other recent books on the Greek hero, this account does not ignore or merely list some of the adventures, but devotes a chapter to each of the feats, known collectively as the 12 labors of Hercules. Colorful and quite stylized, the illustrations are decorative and at times dramatic, if rather cold. They tend to disengage readers' sympathies from Hercules, while the text has the opposite effect. The First Superhero

Parents have been telling their children of the Twelve Labors of Hercules for over 2,500 years. It is one of those fundamental stories that are at the very core of the Western literary tradition. The superheroes we so closely follow in comic books, television shows and motion pictures are derivitives of the story telling formulas the ancient Greeks laid out long ago.

James Riordan's "The Twelve Labors" fits into a nice niche. It can be read to young children and it is also a good book for young readers (Grades 3-6) who are looking for a more advanced chapter book. But beware, there is certain moral ambivelence in the Hercules stories. Due to Hera's jealousy, Hercules is manipulated into doing some pretty terrible things. Not only does he kill his wife and sons, Hercules accidently also kills a number of innocents. If you think Batman has a dark side, you have not seen anything. But in the end, it is this duality which makes Hercules an interesting superhero.

A good rendering of the classic tale, but with a major flaw

All cultures have their legends of heroes and the greatest in Western culture is Hercules. His twelve labors were considered so impossible that any extremely difficult task is now described as herculean. However, the myth of Hercules is as much a tale of tragedy as it is of triumph, making it more complex than a simple tale of hero defeats villain. His labors are a penance for having murdered his wife and family in a fit of mindless rage. Meted out by the Oracle at Delphi, it is clear that the intent of the punishment was to have him die in the attempt. It is important for children to learn these myths, as they explain a great deal about how the ancients viewed the world and how our understanding of the world has changed over time. Books like this, detailing the labors at the level of children, should be required reading in the early years. While the story is readable and the illustrations well done, there is one serious difficulty with the book.
Zeus and the other gods, creatures such as centaurs and Titans such as Atlas appear in the labors. When my youngest daughter was reading the book, she often stopped and asked questions like, “What’s a centaur?” If I had not been present to answer the questions, her enjoyment of the book and understanding of the tales would have been significantly reduced. It would have been very helpful if a list of the characters in the book with a one sentence description had been included.
Overall, the authors do a good job in telling the greatest myth of antiquity. The illustrations help keep the attention of the reader, but the lack of explanation concerning the other characters does weaken it.

The book, Crested Kimono, is an excellent example of the potential for the integration of real life experiences with sociological theories. It is also extremely well written and tends to read like a novel. Professor Hamabata, an American citizen of Japanese ancestry, divided his book into seven chapters: (1) Boundaries, (2) Perspectives, (3) Households, (4) Death, (5) Authority, (6) Marriage, and (7) Love. I shall briefly describe each of these chapters, making personal comments where it seems necessary. I shall conclude with a general critique. The first chapter, "Boundaries," explained how Professor Hamabata was able to establish relationships with some elite Japanese families-thus making his research possible. When he first arrived in Japan, Hamabata was planning to conduct ethnographic research among top business executives. However, the contacts that he made turned out to be quite superficial. Indeed, Hamabata "wondered why [he] had traveled all the way ! to Tokyo only to hear what could be read in documents available in almost any American University." Moreover, he suffered from two major problems of identity: (1) Was he a Japanese or an American. (2) Was he a sexually available male or a immature student? After deciding to play back-and-forth with the first question, he determined that it would be best (in terms of his study) to assume the identity of a "immature graduate student." Yet, in assuming such an identity, he was soon shut out of the "man's world," which he had hoped to gain access to. However, by spending a lot of time with the wives and children of elite businessmen, he was able to obtain a lot of information on love and marriage-but the importance was yet unclear. In chapter two, "Perspectives," Hamabata discovers that the lives of elite businessmen "cannot be understood apart from the women who act as their partners." This short chapter represents an attempt to demonstrate the legitimacy of basing hi! s study (almost entirely) on observations and interactions ! of elite women and their children. Hamabata wants the reader to believe that his study is somehow advancing beyond the traditional wisdom of sociologists. He wants to go beyond the "neat boundary that sociologists have usually drawn around the family." In short, he is arguing that his idea about Japanese wives has broken new ground. However, the argument that his study is ground-breaking in its initial idea is somewhat misleading. I would agree that his study has indeed added knowledge to the field, but its success was largely based on his unique circumstances (e.g., physical appearance, language ability, and personal connections). More to the point, it is misleading to suggest that scholars of Japan have failed to see the connection between the family and the economy. Many writers before Hamabata have noticed the connections that women have with and within the family enterprise. For instance, as Suzanne Vogal writes, "the interdependence of the husband's and wives! roles in the division of labor is merely a manifestation of the interdependence that characterizes Japanese society" (Vogal, 1978: 16). Likewise, Ann Imamura writes, "the housewife has the greater responsibility of managing the household, including the finances, by herself" (Imamura, 1987: 83). So the new insight about Japanese women that Hamabata claims to have is not as profound as he thinks it is. However, as with the first man to walk on the moon, the actual success of his study-as opposed to its original inspiration-is to be praised. In chapter three of his book, entitled "Households," Hamabata explains how households are formed and constituted among the upper crust of the Tokyo elite. He explained in detail the importance of succession and inheritance in the Japanese household. I was especially amazed by the cold and calculating nature of the Japanese mother he described. The mother actually went so far as to hire a private detective to research the background of! a prospective son-in-law. Similarly, because her own son ! had "entered a third ranked university," she was considering denying him the head ship of the family by bringing in a mukoo-yoshi. All that sort of behavior would be fascinating for the cultural game theorists, who model these behaviors mathematically. The "bringing in a mukoo-yoshi" is actually quite rare among most of the Japanese she knew. So, one criticism of Hamabata's third chapter is that seems to claim this sort of behavior is wide spread in Japanese society. But maybe the mukoo-yoshi phenomena is more concentrated among the elites of Japanese society. However, Professor Hamabata rarely, if ever, considers the enormous class difference of his "informants." In chapter four, "Death," Hamabata describes the process whereby the Japanese deal with a death in the family. He goes into some detail about how the dead family member is "removed from the realm of the living and ultimately from the world of men." It was particularly interesting to note the lack of stro! ng belief that Hamabata's informants had in the "afterlife." When pressed, none of them would unequivocally declare a belief in ancestral spirits. At least for the upper crust of Japanese society, the dead are treated in a very calculating and utilitarian-like fashion. In Hamabata's interpretation, all the rituals for the dead seemed to be more for the benefit of the living. And the dead often took center stage in familial power struggles. In contrast to many of the observations Hamabata made, I think his discussion of death applies widely across Japanese society. As an English teacher in Osaka, I spoke with hundreds of Japanese and only met one who expressed a sincere belief in the existence of dead ancestors. I believe that Japanese live somewhat of a duel life in this regard. For the most part, they accept the theory of evolution. Yet, at certain times of the year, they suspend their scientific belief in order to strengthen their family bonds. It all seems very r! ational. Apparently for Japanese, "God was made for man," ! whereas American Christians tend to assume that "man was made for God." In chapter five, "Authority," Hamabata largely describes the struggles for power that occurred after grandfather Moriuchi had passed away. Mr. Moriuchi did not specify which of his son's should assume the dominate position in the ie structure. He had left the instructions that his trusted assistant should temporarily hold the position until he (the trusted assistant) could make the judgment as to a successor. But this created quite a power struggle within the extended family. After several brothers had experienced financial failures, it eventually became clear who would succeed. With the resolution of the matter, the family enterprises were better able to move on towards economic success. I thought this chapter was especially insightful in its providing real life examples for Nakane's more theoretical insights. As Nakane writes, "No matter how strong the unity, no matter how happy the group, the s! udden removal of the leader is a severe blow and automatically brings a household rebellion" (Nakane, 1970: 44).

All in the Family

An interesting study of family patterns and strategies among Japanese business families, Hamabata's book
alternates between two poles. On one hand you have extremely complex descriptions of family authority structures and how families develop combined with a lot of Japanese terminology. He takes the theories of a number of writers and tests them out in practice. On the other hand, there is a lot of very interesting descriptive material which not only elucidates the more complex material, but reveals a lot of the research process and the personal tribulations (and even mistakes) of the American author. It's a very honest book from which you can learn the difficulties of anthropological research as well as anything about Japanese society.

There are some contrasts in Japanese society which have been written about many times. Hamabata connects them very skillfully with high-level Japanese business families. One is the contrast between IE and UCHI, perhaps succinctly explained as between household and home. In the former, continuity and organization are paramount, obligations (GIRI) are more important than human feelings (NINJÔ). In the far more flexible UCHI, it's the reverse. My explanation is simplified, for the details, read the book. Hamabata himself writes, "..the IE looks less like a family and more like a corporate group with a variety of options available to it..." While admiring the author's work and not wishing to detract from it---I felt that few readers would be able to follow everything that he writes about the IE, the Japanese household or "family".

On the contrary, the descriptive material is extremely clearly-written. The author was lucky, thanks to certain contacts, to be able to penetrate into the private worlds of several Japanese business families. He socialized more with the wives and talked with the young adult children, rather less with the men at the head of the families because he chose to be "an immature graduate student" rather than a serious scholar who should have been married. Love vs. duty, marriage arrangements, death, authority and a lot about rituals, expectations of life and family behavior are discussed in the various chapters. While CRESTED KIMONO may not be the last word on Japanese society, and the research was done over 30 years ago, it certainly reveals a lot that is generally closed to outsiders, especially non-Japanese. If you were compiling a short list of useful books for an introduction to Japanese society, I would still put this one on it, despite my comments above.

Sociological Analysis wrapped in the form of a Coming-of-Age Novel

Although Hamabata is definitely astute in his observation and analysis, the book felt a little too much like a coming-of-age novel rather than a relevant sociological analysis. Yet, at the same time it dealt with issues that seem to be not openly discussed especially towards Western audiences. It is filled with useful information despite the embarrassing moments of Hamabata's self realizations.

A well-known critic of popular culture ( Buppies, B-Boys, Baps & Bohos ) George's first attempt at fiction is unfortunately clumsy. Dwayne Robinson, an aspiring music critic and intellectual bad boy from Brownsville (via St. John's University), falls in love with Danielle Embry, a dreamy Yale graduate from Connecticut who edits books for Doubleday but has her eye on the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. Set in the early '80s, it gives the author an opportunity to show his wide knowledge of the b-boy subculture that Dwayne is busy writing about and that his friend Reggie is busy promoting. Dwayne struggles with his deepening feelings for Danielle while she, now in her first hectic year at Columbia, holds him at arm's length. Squabbles and tension are more frequent until Danielle realizes she is pregnant and the two must face decisions about commitment and ambition. George's characters are flat and the prose can be downright painful ("Danielle looked delicious, and Dwayne was grinning like he wanted a taste."), retarding a potentially decent plot.

Dwayne Robinson, the protagonist of Ur ban Romance, might just be Nelson George in the early Eighties: He's a freelance writer and music critic for the Village Voice , Essence, and Billboard , waiting for inspiration for his first book. (George's own first book wasn't on music, but it does deal with black culture, as do his later books, such as Buppies, B-Boys, Baps & Bohos, LJ 1/93). Dwayne lives in two worlds--the world of poor black New York, b-boys, just-rising rap music, and the world of buppies, black middle-class urban professionals. Disdaining buppies, Dwayne nevertheless is pushed toward them by his new love, Columbia journalism graduate student Danielle, whose suburban New Jersey upbringing contrasts strongly with Dwayne's Brooklyn background. Much more than just an "urban romance," this book uses the relationship between Dwayne and Danielle to explore black music, politics, and urban life. Despite some stilted dialog, too stiff characters, and unlikely coincidences, this novel is highly recommended for popular collections.

Buppies and b-boys bring the full weight of their lifestyles to bear in this desperately dull fiction debut from screenwriter and critic George (Elevating the Game, 1992; The Death of Rhythm and Blues, 1988, etc.), squashing their characters flat in the process. Dwayne Robinson is a promising music critic on the scene when rap begins to take off in the early 80's; Danielle Embry is a rising star at the Columbia School of Journalism, with a keen interest in TV and politics. They meet; they mate; they make a mess of their relationship (Dwayne can't tell her he loves her). Meanwhile, Danielle's ex-roommate, the rising young law clerk Jacksina, has gotten under the robes of Judge Alvin Peters, known as ``see 'em, free 'em'' for his reluctance to make defendants serve time for their crimes. Jacksina and Alvin--old enough to be her father and unhappily married--romp like young lovers while Dwayne and Danielle agonize over careers and disparate family backgrounds. Danielle gets pregnant, and her abortion effectively terminates her connection with Dwayne. Jacksina gets knocked up by her lover too, but they want the child in spite of the ensuing tabloid headlines. The result: one failed romance, one happy couple--one yawning audience. An light-hearted look into African American relationships.

Nelson George has been referred to as the male Terry McMillan of contemporary
African American fiction. That is an understatement. Urban Romance is the
tale of two young Afrcan American professionals dealing with sex, love and
realtionships in New York City. It is a refeshing change from souppy
romance novels because the characters are so real you believe George is
either writing about you or your best friend. A MUST read.

URBAN slow dance.

If a book can grab me within the first 50 pages, then I'm hooked. With URBAN ROMANCE, it took a little longer to get the story going, but because I paid for the book, I decided to keep going. It definitely got better, but it would have been better to not spend so much time on slow introductions of the major players. Sometimes, that can wear the story down quicker than a three course meal. Still, a good book

In his first novel nelson george tells a tale of young love, lost and found amongst youb urban Black professionals in New york City. George does a fine job at reaching beneath the surface of his character and making them feel real. He also didn't allow the plot to become entirely predictable. He also gets points for writing about the beginings of hip hop culture. A very enjoyable first novel.

About the Author
Michael Stephen Schiro has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. He received his bachelorate from Tufts University and his doctorate from Harvard University. In the 1960’s he worked for school desegregation n North Carolina. In the 1970’s he worked to improve urban education in Lowell, Massachusetts. He was chair of the Department of Teacher Education and School Administration at Boston College in the 1980’s. He specializes in mathematics education and curriculum theory, and taught courses in mathematics education, curriculum theory, computer education, literacy, and multicultural education at Boston College from 1974 to 2009, when he retired. He published eleven books with such diverse titles as Integrating Children's Literature and Mathematics in the Classroom, Oral Story Telling and Teaching Mathematics, Mega-Fun Math Games, Curriculum for Better Schools: The Great Ideological Debate, and Tan and the Shape Changer.

From Conflicting Visions to Systematic Improvment

In Curriculum Theory: Conflicting Visions and Enduring Concerns, Michael Stephen Schiro provides a rigorous description and outlook on the major curriculum ideologies that have developed over the 20th century and that still largely impact our education system today. The four curriculum ideologies identified are Scholar Academic, Social Efficiency, Learner Centered, and Social Reconstruction. Schiro reminds the readers that our actions, as educators and curriculum developers, are largely a combination of the characteristics of each ideology and furthermore, that our beliefs may still be centered on one ideology. In the introduction, readers are asked to complete a short inventory that allows them to visually graph their curriculum actions and beliefs. This gives you, as a reader, a perspective of how your experiences have impacted the lens for which you view education. Then as you continue to read, you will notice your lens broadening and shifting based on the perspectives you gain through each chapter. This is the purpose of the text, as described by Schiro (2013). The purpose is “provide readers with a sympathetic perspective on the visions of schooling” and “give readers a perspective on their own philosophies of education” (p. 3). As an educator in the current reform movement, I found these aims largely vital in ensuring systematic improvement in our schools.
The four middle chapters go into detail over each curriculum ideology. In each chapter, Schiro outlines the ideology’s educational aims, view of children, perspective on learning, concept of teaching, epistemological beliefs of knowledge, and concerns of assessment and evaluation. Throughout the chapter, your understanding the ideology’s conceptual framework is further developed through a thorough description of the historical framework. The historical framework provides readers with an understanding of how the ideologies have developed, major influences of the ideologies’ development, and how the ideologies have altered throughout the last century. Furthermore, Schiro’s extensive overview of the ideologies’ conceptual framework provides the readers with a thorough understanding in order to make adjustments and/or shifts in personal curriculum beliefs situated among the ideologies. The final two chapters assist the readers in further exploring the interaction of the ideologies and the dynamic nature of change in our own beliefs and the coalesced beliefs of our education system.
In the concluding statement of the text, Schiro states, “And I hope this perspective will provide educators with the personal insights and power they need to make themselves into the people they want to be as they confront the multiple visions for the future of education that compete for their allegiance” (p. 261). This statement exemplifies the future of educational reform. Exceptional leadership begins first by becoming more reflective in our actions and thoughts through “personal insights” and identification of our core beliefs. It is through this process, that we begin to possess the skills needed in order to create a shared vision for our school based on collective ideologies. Moreover, it is through this shared vision that we are able to develop a culture of continuous improvement. Schiro’s extensive text will provide teacher leaders with an understanding of the dynamic nature of change and systematic thinking in order to respect each ideology’s strengths and weaknesses and move forward with an action plan of improvement.

Exploring Ideologies and Reflecting on Self

This second edition of Michael Schiro’s (2013) text is designed to provide a thorough discussion of four distinct curriculum ideologies: Scholar Academic, Social Efficiency, Learner Centered, and Social Reconstruction. Schiro’s writing is easy to read and his earnest tone helps draws the reader into personal reflection on the topic. The first chapter includes a brief overview of each ideology and describes the intended audience, which includes curriculum practitioners, disseminators, evaluators, advocates, developers, and theorists. He clearly explains how he selected to use ideology rather than philosophy, and he describes the alignment of his classification scheme with those of other researchers. Readers are encouraged at the beginning of the chapter to complete the inventory included in the appendix as a pre-assessment of their perspectives on curriculum.

For each of the four highlighted ideologies, Schiro provides a chapter that follows a specified structure. Each includes an overview of the ideology along with an example of how the ideology is enacted in current classroom practice. He details assumptions of the ideology and explains its historical context. Schiro explores the perspective of the given ideology in relation to the following topics:
• Aims
• Child
• Learning
• Teaching
• Knowledge
• Evaluation
Although this structure often results in unnecessary repetition of various ideas, readers likely will appreciate Schiro’s efforts to provide a multifaceted view the complexities surrounding each ideology. He embeds discussion related to current controversies in education. Issues explored have ramifications for all levels of education, including K-12 and post-secondary settings.

The sixth chapter provides a comparative overview of the four curriculum ideologies. Schiro compares and contrasts the ideologies, considering, for example, relationships between sources and uses of knowledge as well as relationships between objective and subjective reality. The ideologies are brought to life for readers through mini-plays that illustrate how teachers who hold beliefs reflective of each of the different ideologies might discuss various curricular issues related to their daily instruction.

In the final chapter of this text, Schiro encourages readers to revisit the Curriculum Ideologies Inventory to determine if any of their views have changed. He discusses educators’ curriculum life histories and explains a variety of factors that might lead an educator to emphasize different ideologies at different points in his or her career. He also addresses questions such as, “Can an educator simultaneously base his or her practice on more than one ideology?” Included in this thought-provoking chapter are short summaries of multiple educators’ journeys with curriculum ideologies that illustrate points discussed.

Overall, this text met my expectations and prompted me to engage in reflection on my views about curriculum and the role of education in general. I appreciated the additional sources on which Schiro based his discussions; at times, however, he relied too heavily on a given source. In addition, this text would benefit from thorough copyediting to correct the numerous typos that distracted from an otherwise well written book.

Before reading Curriculum theory: conflicting visions and enduring concerns, I understood myself and my philosophy of education, but it had not yet been deepened by exposure to different and quite progressive ways of thinking and form my clear philosophy. Now, my philosophy of education has become clearer and ethically aware and more willing to take appropriate risks also. I have a greater vision for my sense of place in the world, as a teacher and a facilitator of understanding, wisdom, grace, creativity, peace, and liberation from righteous ignorance. Schiro presents in his book a four curriculum ideologies Scholar Academic Ideology, Social Efficiency Ideology, Learner Centered Ideology, and Social Reconstruction Ideology. In each ideologies has discussed the overview of the ideology, history, aims, the child, learning, knowledge, teaching, and evaluation. The last a couple chapters will be a comparison between the four ideologies and going more in depth of the individual perspective on the curriculum ideologies.
In Scholar Academic Ideology, chapter two, the teachers have to be experts about their subject. The teacher has to transfer all the knowledge to the students. Students would be required to memorize information and to learn in my opinion by rigid methods that were not serving them. Scholar Academic teachers are viewed the child as a mind and they are evaluating the children to check on them if they meet the standard.
Social Efficiency Ideology, in the chapter three, Schiro discussed the goal of this ideology which is training the citizens/students to meet the society needs. The educators who are believing in that are pushing their student to gain skills by doing and practice them. They are also view learning as process and throughout these process the students will be able to change and improve. The teacher here is a leader who is leading, controlling the students, and giving them formative and summative evaluation.
One clear ideologies that exemplifies these advantages and is an intellectual model to me is Learner Centered Ideology which is chapter four. It is the one that has had the most impact on me as an educator and a woman. I want to use and practice Learner Centered Ideology with my future kindergarten students because it is the closest match to my views on teaching, education, and schools as possible. Learner Centered believed in growth of individuals as an important way to develop children’s intrinsic capabilities. Like me, Learner Centered person believes that experiential knowledge is essential for all students. I, too, believe in the cultivation of experience of as a way to access greater brain and vision capacity. Through the process of learning, I believe that higher, more mysterious, intuitive, and free aspects of the brain’s functioning can be allowed to flow out. This can also help students to construct their knowledge through assimilation and accommodation. I feel a kinship with Learner Centered people because they are working in search of refinement of vision of each individual students. Learner Centered Ideology teaches us that children are capable of great things and that we should invest in them in the right ways, from where they are. To me, it is the closest match to me in terms of ideas about making progress in the field of education.
Social Reconstruction education model which is chapter five is imbued with the kind of sensitivity that is fit for our ever more multiracial and multicultural situations worldwide. It is suitable for the world as it is today, and more than that, it anticipates some of the doctrinal problems and imbalances, politically, religiously, and economically. Social reconstruction people are preparing themselves for the role of high-level social reformer. They are working really hard for experiencing the world. They believe in the knowledge as a way of developing sensitivity and empathy, and they have the foresight to see that it would act as a kind of bridge for intimate relationship with culture, environment, and people. Through education, people could come to appreciate aspects of other cultures while understanding their own cultural position. For me, this is a part of my philosophy and I would want my students to be able to understand themselves and their identity as well as their place in the world. There is a lot of world out there and I am really looking forward to opening my students’ eyes, beyond country, beyond cultural barriers.

Schiro’s ideas have had an impact in my own curriculum development and teaching style, such that the old ways of working with my students that has no certain ideology seem so thoughtless and obsolete. Ultimately, I hope that education at all levels would reach the point where Schiro hopes to take us, in which four philosophical visions can coexist for students and their teachers.

Happiness equals Reality minus Expectations

It is a shame more people haven't read/reviewed this book since it is so easy to read and can help a motivated person understand how to improve their day to day happiness with some simple techniques. I suppose you could select a more academic approach to understanding cognitive theory, but why? Actually, if even Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, keeps his groundbreaking tour of the mind in "Thinking Fast and Slow" as simple as the authors of "Engineering Happiness", then the key to appreciating the book is its simplicity.

The first discussion of the "Laws Of Happiness" reveals social comparisons the brain automatically makes, such as what we have vs. our peers. From how much you earn, to what kind of car you drive to the test results you received in school, your brain makes comparisons and your happiness is fundamentally based on these comparisons. For instance, back in your school days, chances are you were really happy to get a B in Statistics until you found out all your friends received an A. You were immediately, and negatively, impacted by the news of your peers grades and that good feeling you experienced was consigned to the rubbish bin. But should you have done that? Of course not!

The Laws of Happiness presented in the book around satiation, expectations and framing are simple to understand, share with others and use every day. It is important to understand how you think about happiness, especially if you want to improve how happy you feel. I was initially curious about the book and I couldn't help thinking about disappointments in the past, some quite recent, and how unhappy they made me feel. Understanding the role of "basic" goods in my happiness and the rules of satiation gave me a new perspective on how to go about every day in a new way.

The aforementioned book, "Thinking Fast and Slow" is equally accessible and is a much more detailed description of cognitive theory, but still very practical. I read it after "Engineering Happiness" and it made me even more appreciative of the authors "Laws of Happiness" approach.

If you want another interesting insight into how our brains affect our perspectives, happiness and how it manages complexity, read "The Black Swan" by Nichalos Taleb. Review his theory on our propensity for simplistic reductions of the complex events we experience. His ideas on how we think influenced Kahneman ["Fast and Slow"], and I found these books to be formative, helpful and well worth the investment of time. So get happy ;-)

Happiness comes from choices each one of us can make

The authors are engineers and decision theorists (full disclosure: one of the authors is my colleague at UCLA Anderson School of Management). I was aware of some of their work in the area already. But I was blown away by how many insights this book contains. What makes this book really special is the specificity of their advice - the advice you can implement almost immediately and observe for yourself its validity and its effects in your life. Chapter 9 on Basic Goods alone is worth many times the price of this book. Even simple advice on how to structure your vacation is simple and easy to implement without making any change in what you spend on your vacation. And all the insights are based on a synthesis of years of careful research by many experts. Buy this book, read it, and start following their suggestions today. You will be happy you made this choice.

Fantastic life advice I really appreciated and needed!

I really enjoyed reading this. In the daily struggle that is life- I needed and got logical, evidence based (love that) helpful advice that I remind myself about when ever there is a difficult moment or hard decision to make.
The authors provided a great example on every page, but the 2 pieces of advice that I personally needed to apply on a daily basis were- stick with your original decision and avoid quick outbursts of anger.
I am not doing this justice, but in a nutshell:
Regarding the advice to stick with your original decision- Remind yourself that it is easy to forget why you originally decided to do things a certain way, and we often become susceptible to a new point of view at the last minute, etc. you need to remember that you made your original decision for good reasons. Your original decision may not always be the best one, but if you stick with it, you can more clearly determine your future needs and hone your own life code.
I am prone to quick internal anger outbursts. This sometimes results in saying things that are damaging to the people around me and therefore myself and my happiness. Their advice is that anger quickly dissipates and that studies show giving into anger often results in increased anger. This is a great nugget to keep in mind daily when the going gets tough- you will feel better soon and don't let your quick anger ruin the good long term relationships you have sought to build.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a logical argument and wants to navigate life with increased happiness!

Book came with missing pages, pages out of order, whole chapters missing. It was brand new and sealed so I was shocked. I'm returning and buying the ebook because I need it for school and I can't wait to see if the next one is functional. I hope we don't need it during class or lab...

Lacks clarity and organization

The first time I read this book I did not like it. I figured I was being too harsh. My second time reading it only made me dislike it more. I'm not saying it is a horrible book, but it is not as easy to read as most other textbooks I have learned from.

My main gripes are that the book lacks clarity and organization. The authors use an approachable, casual tone. An unintended side effect is vague language and poor word choice results in confusion. Sometimes an adequate introductory paragraph with a structural overview for a chapter or segment is not provided. In some instances, they provide an overview paragraph then abandon the structure it provided. Other times structure is not logically appealing. Paragraphs may cite information that seems out of place or unimportant and feel overall disorganized/ lost. Additionally, there are outright errors (the instructor had to state when to ignore the text) lead to more confusion.
