WOW!

So you're familiar with my background, I received a B.S. in Astrophysics and now I am a first year graduate student in an Applied Math program. I used this book as a supplementary resource when studying Partial Differential Equations - we got to Separation of Variables and then to Fourier Series. Every Physics student who graduates today has at least seen a Fourier Series (I hope). I didn't feel confident in my abilities so I bought this book to review.

Let me tell you, if this is your first time hearing about Fourier Series then this book is simply the BEST book to learn Fourier Series and much of the beautiful underlying theory behind Fourier Analysis! It's so well written and clear that I had absolutely no trouble following the text. I cannot express how clear and beautifully it is written, it is extremely rare for a math book at this level to be so vivid and eloquent! The proofs are easy to follow and the problems ease you into the subject presented in each section; which, in turn, are "bite-sized" and manageable. I studied the material by myself and walked away knowing Fourier Series.

There are plenty of good examples, the problems are great! If you're self-studying (or not) do as many of the problems as you can; if you read the previous two or three sections you should have absolutely no trouble going through the problems. Applications galore!

NOTE: This book isn't written at the graduate level, don't shy away from it because I mentioned being a grad student, I just wanted a review of Fourier Series. If I had to rate the level of the book I would say it's at a beginning upper-division level of a typical american university. If you've had a decent multi-variable calculus class, and are comfortable with partial derivatives, this book should be very comprehensible. It's clearer still to physics majors (or the like) who are more familiar with what and where specific equations apply to.

This book is beautiful, and I think it should be required reading of every physics and applied math student everywhere (maybe I'm just a little biased).

The ONLY caveat is that the Fourier Complex Series is left to problems, we don't get to use them to learn theory and get more comfortable with. This is okay since the cosine and sine series are equivalent to the complex series, it's just that the complex series is more elegant when doing problems or proving things.

If you are an advanced undergraduate student or a begining graduate student and want to learn not only the concepts behind Fourier Series but see how it can be applied to boundary value problems of mathematical physics, then this is "the" book you should read. It is well written - easy to understand and illustrated with lots of examples.

A guide book to getting married in a year

Would a yearlong, twelve-step plan help you get motivated into finding the right person to plan a future and family with? Author Janet Blair Page, Ph.D. presents just such a plan in her new book.

Page tells readers in an easy-to-read and even easier to follow, book where she highlights that the main goal is not just getting married in a year, but marrying well to the person that fits you the best. Yet another important message she writes about is the importance of developing a time frame to set and achieve a goal.

There are three main sections to the book, what you are doing wrong, beginning the search and on the road to happily ever after. There are numerous worksheets, self-assessment quizzes, lists such as the spouse shopping list and numerous suggests for self-reflection included throughout the book. There are also short "Love Notes" and "Love Stories" that are fun and interesting.

One of the most unique concepts Page describes is the "Love Resume" used to create a catalog of past relationships. Each chapter begins with a myth and a truth phrase. One sample is that the right person will complete you, the myth. The truth, the right person will be a good match for the person you happen to be.

This is just a fun and interesting book that is a delight to read. If you like it, you can get a ring on it (your ring finger) in no time. I'd recommend the book for those looking to find the right person to form a long lasting relationship.

I love this book

I love this book. It's like premarriage counseling, I'd say. It helped me figure out what I'm looking for in a man and discover things about myself. I have yet to get married, but within owning the book for 2 weeks I got my first date in over a year, and it went surprisingly well. Also, for the second time in my life, I got asked on a second date. He's everything I'm looking for, but I would have passed him up and never given him a chance had this book not taught me what I'm looking for.

A Fantastic Introspective look at finding a mate and getting to know yourself.

It was a thrill and an honor to be asked to review the newest book 365 Days to "I Do" Get Married This Year by one of Atlanta's very own. Janet Blair Page, PhD has more than 30 years in psychotherapy private practice in Atlanta and New York. She teaches at Emory University and has a very successful dating class that has been featured on Atlanta's CNN, FOX, Good Morning America, and The Early Show.

With 2012 literally right around the corner, what better time is there than right now to pick up a copy of this book if you are in the dating game and looking to pair up for life. I mean come on, if the Turtle Doves can do it, so can we! With Dr. Page's help you can start off 2012 looking for the right the partner, and you will also get tips on how to "get to know yourself get out of your own way" when it comes to finding love and happiness.

The book is loaded with tips and advice, but it is also interactive in that it begins with having the reader take a good look at themselves and their history in Chapter One. From that information the book has a jumping off point to help you realize and evaluate finding love and a relationship.

Here's a sample of the many "Love Notes" that are through out the book:

"Heed the old cliche` when you point a finger, there are three more pointing back at you."

From Chapter 3: Self-Indulgence

"Nothing dampens a love relationship faster than yelling, meanness, and overall immaturity. After all, it takes a grownup to have a good marriage: in fact, it takes two. Character assassination is not foreplay."

As someone who's been married for quite some time, I can say that this book is full of real, practical advice that really rings true and not just for those that are single. Sometimes in a relationship, after it has matured, you can forget some of the fundamental basics of respect and consideration to yourself and your partner. All those things you try to do while catching a partner, should be continued after you've snared them, if you plan to keep them.

Let's look at one of Janet Blair Page's lectures on dating don'ts.

Dating Don'ts'By Janet Blair Page, PhD,

'Dating should be more about the positive than the negative, but there are still some things any smart dater should avoid. Keep these don'ts in the back of your mind to avoid some of the most common dating mistakes.
Don't nag, complain, get angry, swear, or drink too much on the first date, and little if any on future dates. If that's his best behavior, you don't want to see his worst. And if he doesn't care enough to be on his best behavior on a first date, you don't want to date him anyway!

Understand that if the other person is less-than-wonderful, they still might be a great mate. They might care, they might be nervous, they might not have had a trillion dating experiences. It's easy to be smooth and unflappable when you aren't invested, and you know you're not going beyond a few dates.

Don't go where one person knows everyone, and the other knows no one. This could be uncomfortable for the person who doesn't know a soul. They might feel stared at and judged -- and they might be stared at and judged. They also might feel your choice is a power play. Preferably, keep it more or less equal and on mutual or new turf for the first time.

Don't talk too much about work on any date, even if you love your job. At least pretend you have balance in your life at the beginning. If you're going to accomplish a good marriage in the future, you'll need to develop it anyway.

Don't talk about your ex. There's a matchmaking group in New York called Godmothers. They asked their clients what was the worst thing that happens on a first date. Almost everyone said the same thing: hearing about the ex. It's boring. It also communicates that you're still carrying baggage. And your date will assume quite correctly that where you're going to dump that baggage is on him.

Don't name-call. As we've previously discussed, character assassination is not foreplay. Your date wants to be treated like a person, not immediately and verbally lumped into the "jerk" category with all of your exes and Charles Manson. If he upsets you, let him know with words -- preferably ones that imply you have faith he could change -- but never names.

Don't interrupt. You'll never know how he would have finished his sentence, and if you always think you do, you're delusional. Interrupting is rude, even if you think it conveys your similar thinking. All it really conveys is your poor ability to listen. Trust me, he'll be far more impressed with your listening skills than your overly quick come-back.

Don't get involved with people with untreated chronic mental illness. This does not mean people who have solved problems. Given a choice, you're better off with someone who's had problems and successfully dealt with adversity. Nobody gets out of life without having a few problems. You are looking for somebody to marry who is good at whatever life throws at him, not someone to adopt.

Don't get involved with somebody whose ability to care just isn't there. It can be great to be the initiator, the positive one, the enthusiastic one in a relationship. No relationship is precisely 50/50. But if it gets past 65 percent on your part, then you need to reassess. Hold back, do a little less, speak up a little more, and say, "Would you do this for me?" Ask for more things to find out if you can be on the receiving end and aren't blocking him from giving. Being a giver is a great thing to be, but too many givers believe the reward is coming without any verification. Ask yourself if you are satisfied with your mate's willingness to give as well as to take. Ask him if he is satisfied with your willingness to give as well as to take. A sense of fairness in the relationship is based on this balance and understanding.

Don't be rigid about rules, behaviors, or schedules. Flexibility is a wonderful, important attribute to bring to a relationship. People who are extremely inflexible are guaranteed to be problems later on. Someone very inflexible very early in a relationship can be downright tyrannical as the years roll on.

Don't accept an overwhelming number of idiosyncratic behaviors. At best, he will wear you out. At worst, you'll need to commit him.

Don't let assertiveness turn into aggression. Assertiveness means, "I know what I want and I attempt to get it." Aggression is when you demand, insist, bully, manipulate, and will not settle for anything other than your way.

I grew up in Pikeville, and remember this well!

I live in Pike County, Kentucky. The same town these kids are from. I was born, raised and still reside in this God fearing coal town. I am the same age as Natasha. I remember vividly when is happened and how it affected our small town. I remember seeing the pictures of the hotel room they partied in that night and later in life, as an adult I worked with a girl that was at that "blood drinking" party, (she also appears in the documentary on Netflix). I asked her was there "devil worship" or satanic seances and most of what is widely believed to have fueled these murders. Her answer to me, simply put was no. No they did not worship the devil, no they didn't do seances and try to raise the dead or whatever. These kids were all just basically lost, abused, mistreated, and so on..tortured by themselves. They did suck on each others arms that night, "drinking" one anothers blood, or so I was told. She said that she knew not of any plan to go on a "killing spree". It was basically a few of the kids from the party that decided they were gonna take off and head to New Orleans, where they assumed they would "fit in". Eric Conn, Natasha's original attorney (who is now in a whole lotta hot water himself with the government), he seems to love the limelight! If there has ever been an "attention whore" it is Eric C. Conn! It was him that started the devil worship tall tale.
Now I don't claim to have knowledge of any facts. I did not know any of the convicted personally. I only know the rumors and what I have asked people and researched for myself. The author of this very short book seems to have the basics of the murders correct from what I can tell, but she definitely could havedug a bit deeper. I wish this book had of been longer and more in depth. There is A LOT more to this story and if a book were to be written for real, I would hope for a little more investigating and interviews with people that know the people that had their lives stolen by drug crazed teenagers and the people that have knowledge of them too. This "book" was more like a paper written for a college writing course, and was poorly done at that.

Me encantó... es una novela corta, se lee rápido no por lo pequeña sino por lo emocionante y bien escrita. La autora es maravillosa en relatar historias, te es facil imaginar a los personajes así como las escenas. Te adentras tanto en la época del año 760 que crees estar ahi... y las escenas eróticas, son más que buenas. No son vulgares, sino con clase. te hacen despertar leves rubores y hasta emociones más ardientes!!! muyyyy recomendada!

Introduction

How to Use This Book to Save Time and to

Write Compelling Performance Goals

Setting goals for your employees—or, more accurately, helping

them set appropriate goals for themselves—is a very individualized

and personal endeavor. Adding the right elements to the

recipe, so to speak, therefore varies significantly depending on

the individual’s needs and aspirations. Still, your key focus

always lies in customizing a blueprint or template for success to

help your staff members find new ways of increasing their own

productivity, which of course improves your departmental and

ultimately company performance.

Creating Development Plans for Employees

So how exactly should you go about creating individual development

plans for your subordinates, and, more importantly, how

can this book help you get there? First and foremost, always ask

your employees for their input. Without your subordinates’

involvement, drafting development plans in goal statements

becomes hit or miss. Second, realize that employees will remain

loyal to their companies—regardless of headhunters’ calls luring

them away to greener pastures—as long as they’re on a positive

career growth trajectory and they feel appreciated for what they

contribute. This so-called psychic income serves as the glue that

binds workers to their organizations, and it’s clearly the most significant

element of any development plan.

If you convince subordinates that achieving specific goals at

When you describe the best bosses and mentors that you’ve

had in your career, you’re more than likely to use the verb “to be”

rather than “to do.” In fact, in all human relations, “beingness”

typically trumps “doingness” because the greatest influencers on

our lives were loving, supportive, caring, patient, and selfless in

guiding us. And those traits all came much more from who they

were than what they did. In other words, providing others direction

and offering guidance is actually a lot easier than you think.

It’s simply a matter of being a selfless leader who’s committed to

balancing the company’s needs with those of the individual

worker.

If you’re able to make this one paradigm shift in your belief

system—that great leaders focus on being rather than on

doing—you’ll cut a lot of stress out of your life and develop

Great Introduction

I find the phrases exceptionally helpful in this new goal-setting book just as they were in the performance appraisal phrase book written by Paul Falcone. He does an excellent job capturing hard to describe style and personality traits, which other books lack. But what I like best is his introduction -- It provides great advice and wisdom in terms of managing your own career and becoming an effective leader. Sound advice that can be practically applied and implemented--very valuable.

An excellent resource for the busy manager.

As a people manager in todays world, where there never seems to be enough time to do everything you need to do , I've found this book invaluable. It's saved me hours, while allowing me to still be accurate and focused on managing my team.

Sometimes half the battle is figuring out the right way to say what you need to, and that's where this book comes in. Its incredibly helpful at precisely articulating the goals that I want to agree with my people. It's also very helpful for quickly finding and capturing hard-to-define goals relating to employees' personalities and work styles. A perfect tool for todays busy managers. Excellent.

2600 Phrases provides a frame work for writing goals

This book is definitely a "must have" resource guide for managers and supervisors tired of putting in long hours to develop performance goals for their employees. The book provides example goals for many core competencies such as customer service, productivity and volume, and organizational-planning skills. The second section of the book focuses on goals for specific industries.

Each goal also provides a wide range of suggestions on what the goal should look like at 4 different levels within the organization, entry level career, administrative/operational support, individual contributor, front-line supervisor and senior leader.

The book is a starting point, a framework, for writing goals. It is important to remember, however, the SMART rule for setting goals. Supervisors can use the information within the book then flesh them out with measures and time constraints.

Enthralling

Someone told me that this, the second book about the psychologist Sebastian Bergman, is too complicated to enjoy. There are too many threads to follow, too many background stories, too much history which is only slowly revealed. The characterization, I found, was of the best. I managed to get into the characters, into the story, into the entire atmosphere of the work, within the first few pages and lost nothing of the whole throughout the entire book. Every single thread the authors created flowed smoothly together, let an impression on the mind, and was worked into the complete picture seemingly without effort. The storyline is believable, the characters realistic, the background stories almost a high-definition print of modern society.

Sebastian Bergman has fallen on hard times - as have many other fictional detectives or similar characters before him, but this is not a bad point here - devoured by his past, addicted to quick sex and one-night-stands, lost within self-pity and a failure to find personal gratification. He moves from one meaningless affair to the next, consumed with the memory of what could have been, what was and will probably never be again. And the vision of finding a family he does not have, which does not want him.

As a series of murders rocks Stockholm, he is drawn into a complicated game, an intrigue which cannot be linked to the perfect murderer, but which has all the markings of his work. A copycat murderer with a seemingly impossible skill to imitate the murders of a long-since imprisoned man, including actions only the murderer himself, and the small team which finally caught him, can possibly know. And Bergman, a very unwelcome character in the department, is an integral, unwilling part of the whole.

The language, the characters, the entire story flows effortlessly across the page, enticing the reader to think for themselves, to place themselves into the lives of Bergman and his team. The infighting, memories, and investigation allow readers the right level of frustration over the detection process, the lives of the characters themselves, to work themselves into the seemingly complex plot without the impression that they are losing themselves in a labyrinth of dead-ends, padding or wasted words. This is crime writing as it should be, deep and absorbing.

If you or a loved one struggles with self-injury, this book is definitely a go-to with regards to understanding, talking about and treating this tricky and misunderstood disorder. Lori Vann’s “Caregiver’s Guide to Self-Injury” is an insightful look into the seldom discussed and often misunderstood phenomenon of self-injury. Because there is so little information and education in the general public on this topic, family and friends tend to have a knee-jerk reaction when they find that someone is injuring which usually just makes the situation worse. This book is a great help to pull back the curtain and have a better understanding from the perspective of the injurer, as well as to help family and friends to know how to handle the situation. If you have someone in your life who has issues with self-injury, or if you just work around a large number of kids/teens, I would recommend this book.
