About the Author
Barry Gilder was born in South Africa in 1950. He went into exile in 1976, composed and sang struggle songs at anti-apartheid events in Europe and elsewhere, and served in the ANC's intelligence structures until his return to South Africa in 1991. He later became deputy head of the South African Secret Service. He is currently Director of Operations at the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection, a policy think tank set up by former senior leaders in the democratic government.

Courage and Commitment

For this American who lived, worked and studied the transition from apartheid to democracy in South Africa, it was a great pleasure to read Barry Gilder's "Songs and Secrets." The autobiographical account of a white South African taking a front-line position in the liberation struggle leaves one with profound admiration for the author's commitment to the cause, courage in risking all, and competence in the various tasks assigned to him by the ANC. This reader was also intrigued and a bit perplexed by a resilient idealism regarding the socialist model and not a little distressed by the universally negative stereotypes of the West and United States. Nevertheless, the book is fascinating in its accounts of the military camps, Gilder's relationships with colleagues, his training in Moscow, and the bureaucratic battles within the ANC government. One can't help but share the frustration regarding feuding leaders, and the sadness that the 'world has grown old around us.' At times, the language soars; also enjoyable are the interspersed bullet points on developments around the world, calling up so many memories. Above all, the book fills an important niche in the history of the anti-apartheid struggle that is very illuminating for the many interested observers on the outside.

unique insider account of SA revolution and post apartheid governance

It is rare, in one lifetime , to go from normal suburban childhood to hippy folkie to guerrilla revolutionary to super-spy in an elected government, but that's Barry Gilder life arc.
Its even rarer to have this life written down in such a credible and thoughtful way. Maybe the Russian, French and American revolutions had their Barry Gilders. If so, I haven't read those books.
"Songs and Secrets" is one of those niche books about a niche region that will probably disappear. But it is an incredible story about one of the great human mass victories of the last 100 years. The transformation of one of the most humiliating, and well-armed regimes in the sorry history of global racism, into a pretty high-functioning democratic state in a continent that is almost dependant on South Africa succeeding.
The role of a small minority of whites who fought apartheid, not with placards and wine boycotts, but with their hearts, souls and bodies, many of them jewish and communist, was absolutely critical in the strategy and strength of the anti-apartheid struggle. Joe Slovo, Wolfie Kodesh, Ruth First, Albie Sachs and Ronnie Kasrils were the better known names, but guys like Barry Gilder worked in the trenches, undercover, at enormous personal risk. There are sections of this book, Gilder in wintry Moscow, undergoing spy training; Gilder , the only white guy in an Angolan MK camp, Gilder in charge of military ops right under the noses of the apartheid beasts in Gaberone, Botswana that read like a movie that Hollywood would never make.
Halfway through the book apartheid suddenly ends and you think the excitement is over. But Gilder is inducted into the re-shaping of the security and intelligence functions of the new South African government and what follows is the best eye-witness, first-person account of why that story has been such a disappointment to people who though the end of apartheid was the end of injustice, racial suspicion and apartheid manipulations.
Now the man is retired and sailing his boat around South Africa.
Only a seadog could have a yarn like this. Five stars

An Excellent Book That Fills An Important Gap In Our Knowledge About South Africa

This book does an excellent job of addressing the ANC's history during the struggle era. It provides great insights into the challenges of reforming South Africa's government after apartheid, and especially its security institutions. Barry Gilder's experience as a fighter in the ANC's armed wing and as a leader in South Africa's post-transition security forces give him a unique vantage point from which to comment on these historical processes. He skillfully balances personal recollections and emotions with the chronology of struggle and political upheaval in South Africa, offering unique insights into the unfolding of these events, and into the psyche of a white guerrilla trained in Angola and the Soviet Union to fight apartheid. Although written in the form of a memoir, his book provides greater insight than many scholarly works on South Africa's liberation struggle, its transition to democracy, and its aftermath. One gets a sense of the gargantuan task facing a government that has sought in a few short years to end centuries of political and economic privilege for a small racial minority, and to bring freedom and prosperity to tens of millions of marginalized citizens. Gilder also highlights the intrigues and scandals in South Africa's post-apartheid security forces that have undermined the democratic transformation of these institutions. This book is a must-read for those interested in South Africa's modern history, and for those who wish to understand what motivates someone to leave the relative safety of home to join an armed struggle.
