Good for indepth Old Testament Study

This is a good book for an indepth study of the Old Testament. Coogan does a good job of placing the Old Testament in context with history and other cultures around the Israelites. This book was required for my seminary class on the Old Testament. The only reason I didn't give it 5 starts is that it is a little expensive (not so much for a college text book though) and may be a little too indepth for the average Bible study. It would make a good reference for someone leading a Bible study on the Old Testament. It may challenge preconceived ideas that some may have about the authors and time frame of the Old Testament books, just remember the Old Testament is not about who wrote the text, but who inspired the text. If you want a book that places the different periods of the Old Testament into context, this is a good source.

Excellent Biblical Reference

The textbook provides an in depth insight into the Old Testament presented in a factual manner. Other ancient texts are introduced and linked to similar events in the Bible without judgment or an opinion. The reader responsible for his or her decision as to reliability and accuracy. I enjoyed reading the textbook; it opened up a world not taught in religious and Sunday schools. I highly recommend this text to anyone with an unbiased interest in the Old Testament.

About the Author

Paul F. Cook is the Grace B. Kerr Centennial Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Oklahoma. His awards and achievements twice included the Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship and he was the recipient of the National Institutes of Health Research Career Development Award from 1983 to 1988. Professor Cook is Associate Editor of Protein and Peptide Letters and Executive Editor of Proteins and Proteomics.

W.W. Cleland is the M.J. Johnson Professor and Steenbock Professor of Chemical Science at the Enzyme Institute at University of Wisconsin-Madison. In the early 1960s, Cleland's landmark papers created a theoretical framework for the study of steady-state kinetics of multisubstrate enzymes and laid the foundation for all subsequent steady-state studies. He serves on the editorial boards of Journal of Biological Chemistry and of Biochemistry. Recognized by many as the "father of modern enzyme kinetics," Professor Cleland was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1985.

Mainly steady-state, and entirely chemical

The senior author (Cleland) had perhaps the greatest influence of anyone on the practice of enzyme kinetics during the 1960s and 1970s, as witnessed by the very large number of papers from that period that acknowledge his contribution to the work presented, and by the large number of papers that continue to use his terminology and way of representing reaction mechanisms. (Younger biochemists will perhaps not know that he gave the ping pong mechanism its name.) However, until now his recommendations on the subject were not conveniently gathered together in one book, and it was necessary either to go back to his well known series of papers published in 1963 or to various later review articles. This book will be welcome, therefore, to anyone in search of a modern source.

It is a measure of how little the subject has changed that a large part of the book could have been written in 1963; indeed, it gives the impression that large parts of it were indeed written then. The major advance that is covered in detail is the development of the use of isotopes for studying enzyme mechanisms, including both the use of isotopes as labels and the use of kinetic isotope effects as mechanistic probes. Around 100 pages, or about a quarter of the book, are devoted to these topics, and for readers already thoroughly conversant with the 1963 papers these pages will constitute the most valuable part, the part they are most likely to consult in the future. As both authors have made important contributions to the use of isotopes, it is no surprise that the treatment is masterly.

Some other parts of the book are more disappointing. The treatment of pre-steady-state kinetics is superficial: the major methods, such as stopped-flow, rapid quenching and relaxation (temperature jump etc.) are briefly described, but with little indication of what they are useful for. Similar criticisms can be, and indeed often are, made about most books on enzyme kinetics that have a primary emphasis on the steady state, but one could have hoped for more.

In the entire book there is just one sentence (in the Preface, on page xvii) that mentions that enzymes are of interest not just to chemists but that they also have physiological roles to fulfil. Not surprisingly, therefore, although there are a few pages that mention the existence of cooperative and allosteric effects, there is no indication of what functions these might have in the living organism, and no discussion of the kinetics of multi-enzyme systems.

not as much as hoped

I want to improve my enzyme kinetics, so have been looking for books that are helpful. Found this one at amazon. Because the price tag is not small, I decided to rent it from library to have a feeling first. Tons of equations without explanation how they are derived. Although references are provided, it really diminishes the value of being a book: not need to look elsewhere much.
I believe if a couple of equations can be derived in details as examples. It will make a big difference in people's understanding and will be easy for readers to follow when it goes to later and later, such as the isotope labeling.
I never bought the book.

History That Isn’t in Textbooks

Double Cross

Ben Macintyre is a writer to ‘The Times’ of London and has written other best-selling books. This tells about the Allies “final deception” of the war and the spies who helped to achieve it. The invasion of Normandy was stunning success due to these spies. This 2012 book has 25 chapters, ‘Notes’, a ‘Select Bibliography’ and an ‘Index’. These and other spies or operations made Nazi Germany think what the Allies wanted them to think and do what the British wanted them to do. [Dusko Popov, author of “Spy/Counterspy” was said to be the model for “James Bond”. Ian Fleming worked with Popov in 1941 when they came to Washington DC to tell about the interest in Pearl Harbor. Photographs are found after pages 112 and 272.

Chapter 1 introduces the five major intelligence agents. The British captured every German spy sent there (Chapter 2). A few became double agents, the rest imprisoned or executed. The following chapters go into more details for each agent. “Plan Midas” raised funds from the enemy (Chapter 6)! Popov was sent to America to set up a network of fake agents. But this plan failed due to J. Edgar Hoover (Chapter 7). [E. Phillips Oppenheim wrote of a Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1926.] Popov’s German profited from his funds (p.99). By providing a flood of information it dissuaded the Germans from sending over more spies (Chapter 9). The problems of pigeons was addressed with a falconry unit to intercept pigeons. Reports of British chemical weapons helped to avoid a German gas attack (p.134). The chapters continue to report on the activities in preparation for D-Day.

The plotters who attempted Hitler’s assassination wanted to make peace with the Allies to form an alliance against Soviet Russia (p.253). The arrest of “Artist” created a crisis (Chapter 21). The Allies received a detailed report of German defenses from the unknowing Japanese Ambassador (Chapter 23)! D-Day was a surprise but the enemy had prepared defenses. Whatever the casualties were, it would have been worse without the Double Cross deception. Afterwards they reported on a second invasion to keep enemy forces divided (Chapter 25). This was vital to its success (p.334). Two months later “Garbo” received an “Iron Cross” for his services! The ‘Aftermath’ tells of the history of the agents. What happened to Johnny Jebsen (p.358)?

This very readable book shows Macintyre’s skills as a writer. You may find some of the books listed in the Bibliography at your Public Library.

Well Written and Intriguing Story about Intrigue

Macintyre deftly weaves an intriguing tale about intrigue that heavily shaped the D-day invasion in World War II. Double Cross tells the amazing story of a motely group of double agents that the German’s thought were feeding them critical information about the Allies but each of the agents was skillfully controlled by the British. Impressively, a small group of British counter-intelligence experts ran the group as a coordinated effort called the Double Cross program. The scope and scale of the effectiveness of their efforts is mindboggling. At the program’s peak the Double Cross team used each agent like a different instrument in an ensemble to craft a sweet tune to which the Germans swayed. Macintyre brings the story to life by delving into each of the cadre of characters on both sides of the grift. In particular it is fascinating to learn so much about the five key agents, their background, how they ended up as spies and then how they excelled and in a couple of cases stumbled, under the pressures of the program. Macintyre is a gifted writer who is accessible and enjoyable to read. My one slight struggle with the book was attempting to keep straight the cast of characters initially. Macintyre attempts to introduce each of them briefly and then return and flesh them out. In time, as the reader you are able to keep straight the mass of characters but initially it is a little daunting. That minor foible aside, the book is filled with insight and gives great color and analysis to an important, and little appreciated, part of World War II history. Hilariously, some of the Double Cross agents were awarded medals by the Germans for their service (even an Iron Cross). At the end of the book, you’ll be so taken with the heroism of this rag tag group of double agents that you’ll want to award them a medal too.

A Thorough Pleasure

This collection of short stories showcases Ursula Le Guin's absolute mastery of her craft. Of course, in any collection of stories, one will have favorites. The nice thing about this collection is the lesser stories are generally so, not because they are poor, but because they seem a bit incomplete; one wants more, to read more, to explore more, to roll the ideas and the settings around in one's mind.

My favorite story is the first. 'Semley's Necklace' is a touching tale of a sweet young woman, a bit naive, whose misunderstanding alters lives permanently.

Another favorite, though one very unsettling- 'The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas'. Omelas is a wonderful town, where everyone is happy, content, the weather is pleasant. But there is a price to all good things. A terrible price, and one that not all are willing to pay.

OK, a third good one: 'The Rule of Names' is set in Earthsea, a trilogy (later expanded) where wizards exist, and go to school to hone their craft (sound like Harry Potter? Only 20 years earlier!)

Highly recommended. Enjoy!

I bought this book for the first story "Semley's Necklace" however; all of them will surpass your expectations. Ursula has a unique way with words that rival her tales.
