Worth the purchase price - wish there were a sequel!

I read most of the Pride & Prejudice variations, but not all, as I'm rather picky about what catches my interest. I don't care for high angst, graphic love scenes, or extremely out-of-character depictions.

Additionally, I'm a stickler for correct grammar and spelling within stories. This does have a few typos - I noticed two chapters in particular that had a handful of typos. For example, Chapter 26 had at least two typos, I believe, such as, "asked Mrs. Reynolds to prepare a room should another sister's arrival..." Not that big of a deal, honestly. If you are reading these self-published books with the expectation that they will be pristine, you are going to be disappointed regardless of who the author is. For a self-published book, presumably without a paid, professional editor or two to spend weeks or months working on the manuscript, I thought the technical writing aspects were quite good. I'm certain there are far more typos in this short review than in the entirety of that long book.

As far as the plot, it gets a bit slow in between Chapters 17-25 or so, but as the typical reader of this type of story isn't looking for an action-packed drama, I don't know that this will bother many. There's not any torturous, unnecessary angst, which is why I liked the book so much. I don't enjoy forced-marriage scenarios where we have issues of questionable consent at the time of the honeymoon; nor where there are pointless misunderstandings between the couple, dragged out for chapters in order to add dramatic tension. This is not the case here. The arranged marriage as a plot device was very well handled and resolved in a way that felt absolutely perfect. After all, if Mr. Darcy is a practical man, and Elizabeth is not formed for ill humor, does it make sense that such a couple would spend months in misery, misunderstanding and miscommunication?

The epilogue felt a bit rushed, but as I reflected upon it later, there wasn't really a lot left to tell. I would enjoy some short stories to tell us how things went from there, but generally speaking the author does a good job of wrapping up most of the plot threads nicely. I will definitely be looking up her other stories.

Quite an interesting read!

I was a little shy to try this Pride and Prejudice variation because of the title and my extreme dislike of the character of Lady Catherine, however, I am very glad I did.
The overall premise of this variation, especially the semi-forced and certainly presumptive engagement between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth was a delightful change of pace from the original storyline and most variations out there. That our dear Lizzy was thus required to enter into a marriage like that which her dearest friend Charlotte had originally suggested stretched her character and allowed her to grow in a way I believe was missing in Ms. Austen's highly esteemed original plot. Likewise, I was extremely grateful to see the characters of Kitty, Mary, and even Lydia mature in ways that P&P did not even consider. So while I was disgusted by Mr. Collins' abhorrible behavior and did't appreciate the full recognition of relations between Lydia and Wickham, I was very pleased to see how both of these plot points furthered the development of both major and minor characters. I would certainly recommend Lady Catherine Helps! to any JAFF readers and lovers of P&P, and I look forward to reading more by Lorraine Hetschel.

Nice, sweet story

This was a nice, light and sweet story with an original plot and without a lot of angst or suspense. At times it seemed to drag a bit but overall I enjoyed it. I loved the way they took Lizzy's sisters on and helped them. Nice read.

It's a Textbook, What Do You Want?

I've been told, that the tenth edition is a great improvement in the chapters about modern media (internet, social networking sites, etc) are a great improvement over the ninth edition. Personally, I never had to get the 9th edition so I wouldn't know, although reading from the description I am glad that this one is offered in hardcover as opposed to paperback textbooks.

It's a textbook. Your professor requires it, you rent it (or buy it, if you're wealthy or are focusing in PR) and you should use every opportunity to suck the marrow out of it (particularly if you are renting it) because there is a wealth of information!

Excellent resource for brushing up in preparation for the APR exam. Replete with contemporary, relevant examples. Best of all, the publishers did a great job on the TOC so you can quickly navigate through the book.

This book provides a good synopsis of plastics materials and the plastics industry. A good reference book for students or those achieving Certified Plastics Technologist designation. Covers chemistry, types and properties of plastics, machining, processing, coating, fabrication, decorating, design & more.

Few inventors can develop, manufacture and market their product without any use of plastics. Even if your product does not contain plastics, the packaging often does. This book is essentially an encylopedia of plastics and provides a comprehensive overview of plastics history, theory, characteristics and selection, forming, fabricating, and decorating. It has 135 pages of appendices including a glossary and detailed descriptions of plastics families and characteristics. If you need plastics in your venture, you need this book.

And then it gets easy

I'm enjoying this book. It's the text for Material and Process in the Cerritos College Manufacturing program, making some very over my head subject matter easy to understand. The head of the department says it's the one book from the plastics program (To our knowledge the ONLY full college program in plastics) that alumni say they continually refer to.

A good supplement to the "Dummy" chess book

This is a good book for someone not far beyond beginner level. Ostman gives suggestions on how to decide on what move to make next, and then after that. So it's very much a "How to" book with just enough theory to inform the reader why he's suggesting what to do. Every main point he makes is illustrated with a diagram and notations that demonstrate just the point he's making. I don't know why you'd want him to show a whole game when all he wants to show is, for example, how a bishop is made "bad." I would recommend this book as a follow up to the "Dummy" chess book. By the way, I like the "Dummy" book but I hate the title. Whenever people tell me they've read the "Dummy" book they look embarrassed and apologise! Ostman's little book is a refresher course, reminding the reader of what you should do to improve your chances winning. A good follow-up to this book is Silman's "The Amateur's Mind."

Quick summary of How to improve your Chess

I like the book as a tool for chess improvement.

The format:
1.The ideas are developed in a very efficient way.
Main idea, supporting sentences and 3-4 diagrams to illustrate the point.
2.This format may appeal to some readers since you can read the book on a plane without a board.

The content:

You can place every component of the structured thought process proposed by the author into perspective:
What is more important? Knowledge? my chess skills or the process to select a move?
How are chess skill, knowledge and move selection integrate in chess? (in my chess)?

I do not believe all the material is new,(You can find an algoritm on move selection for free on Dan Heisman novice nook) but the author develops his ideas in a congruent fashion:
From the particular Move selection process to the more general topic such as preparation and mental attitude.
I agree with the previous reviewer on the "snippet" format, but to me they are structured and not isolated. They can be valuable for a 1400 player who is looking for a road map to improve or for a 1900 who wants to break it to the next level.

How can a high rated player benefit from the book if he/she already has a stone-cold move selection algoritm? well, the author suggests: "Do not let your plan blind you".In other words (as Dan Heismann mentioned in one of his books) A class A player can move to the next level when he/she realizes there is more than one plan available in every position. The trick is how to integrated that idea with your thinking process. You will find some answers in this book.

Flawed Kindle Edition

The Kindle version of this book lacks some diagrams. For me this defeated the purpose of a eletronic edition. Although I was enjoying the book, missing some diagrams (only the captions shows up), made it impossible to keep reading. If there is not a update to this Kindle edition, correcting these flaws, I'll have to buy the print book to read it.

A concise semi-technical intro

Your body has approximately 10^13 cells in it. And yet there are approximately 10^14 microbes crawling all over your skin, inside your respiratory tract, gastrointestinal tract and other, um, 'nether regions'. This is a vibrant and very complex ecosystem we carry around on, and in, us. In the gastrointestinal tract alone there may be over 400 different types of microbes!
Tannock, professor of microbiology, author also of _Medical Importance of the Normal Microflora_ and _Probiotics: A Critical Review_, gives us here an overview of the remarkable preponderance of the indigenous microbiota. The book straddles the line somewhat between a general readership book and a book for students of microbiology, although it definitely leans toward the latter. For the astute layperson, it contains many fascinating bits of information. Indeed, I would like to see Tannock come out with a longer version aimed squarely at the general science readership.
Chapters are as follows:
1. More than a smell: the complexity of the normal microflora
2. Happy Birthday: the acquisition of the normal microflora
3. Sticky Microbes: the association of microbes with host surfaces
4. Invisible forces: the influence of the normal microflora on host characteristics
5. Undesirable company: the role of the normal microflora in disease
6. Internal renewal: the potential for modification of the normal microflora
At just over 100 pages, it is a quick read, despite some technical text. References at the end of each chapter are to professional journals and textbooks. Perhaps it is because of the book not catering exactly to a particular category of reader that has made it scarce, but whatever the reason, I had a hard time ordering this book through Amazon and ended up getting it via Kluwer Academic Publishers in Norwell, Mass.
As in his other books, Tannock conveys the interdependencies of our symbiosis with the microflora, and as he says in this Preface:
"Our relationship with the normal microflora provide excellent examples of ecological balances that have evolved between species, and the repercussions that ensue should the balance be tilted in favour of one or another partner. An appreciation of this concept is important for all those who study biological sciences."
